Product Description

Product Description

Advanced Pottery describes and illustrates the latest pottery techniques, particularly for making large or complex pots, with examples from leading potters from the UK and abroad. The book shows work from a cross-section of different studio potters and the materials, tools and methods they use. It focuses on advanced techniques, including throwing on the wheel, hand building, coiling, slabbing, making and using moulds and altering thrown work. Clays and glazes are explained in detail, highlighting the many different colours obtainable and giving recipes and methods for creating and modifying glazes. Firing techniques are also covered and instructions for building a fast-fire kiln are included. The book is intended as a practical guide to the latest techniques for potters, teachers, students and anyone interested in working with clay and glazes.

This is an excellent introduction to making things from clay and is suitable for beginners as well for those who may have done short course already. There is good detail in the glaze section and also in the some of the sections concentrating on techniques of building pots. The pictures which show detailed sequences of people making things are outstanding and this was remarked upon by several people who came into my studio to have a look. The balance between text and images is good too - there are enough pictures to pull you in and enough text to keep you once your're there - and the text provides genuinely helpful information. I particularly liked the detail about handbuilding - 20cms at a time - yes, even Kate Malone does that - there are no magic formulas! There are a vast number of 'how to make it' books available about pottery and most of them are good but what is different about this is that it covers such a wide range of making techniques from pinch pots through making pots on the wheel - lovely section on turning the foot rings - through slip decoration to printing on pots as well as glazing - and Kiln building. I'm advised that it makes an excellent companion book to an improvers/ intermediate level course. Strongly recommended.

Although it is called Advanced Pottery this book offers such detailed explanations that a beginner would have no difficulty in using it. It is very comprehensive, starting off describing the different types of clay following on to various techniques such a hand building, throwing and moulding for making functional and ornamental ceramics. Then decoration is covered including glazing, impressing, and printing. The last section deals with firing of all types. It is beautifully illustrated to show the working processes and backed up with a broad glossary and bibliography.
As a second year student of Art Practice I can see myself returning to this book again and again for guidance and inspiration.

Fabulously illustrated and with detailed well explained chapters on many aspects of pottery. It would be valuable both to new-commers to the ceramics world or to those with more experience. This book is interesting and full of valuable information. Highly recommended.
