This book is an excellent book for learning advances texturing and lighting techniques in Maya. I say advanced because you need to have been using the software for a while before reading this book and completing the tutorials in it otherwise there might be some confusion when it talks about applying something to a light or finding a setting for a tool.

The lighting tutorials are extremely helpful and have helped me produce numerous well lit scenes. It explains things very well and helps you to position the lights in the correct areas for the best effect in your scene.

Texturing wise I haven't completed any tutorials yet but if they are anything like the lighting tutorials, they will be very informative on how to improve the objects and characters in your scene.

Its an excellent book for the more advanced Maya user and goes hand in hand quite well with Mastering Maya 2009.

I have the first edition and that helped me alot.

I have recently got back into 3D modelling and needed to brush up/improve my lighting/rendering so I bought this book.
From reading the book I have learnt alot, not just how to set up lights and render etc but what alot of the settings do and why they do that and where you might use this setting/option. The work through tutorials are a great help (especially for me) in learning new techniques etc.

This book may not be for a complete beginner but i would definately recommend it once u get the basics of maya.

I have been learning maya for a few months now and realised I am most interested in texturing, lighting and shading. This book is just perfect for showing me what I can do in this software. It's like a really good teacher, only in the form of a book. Would highly recommend it to 3D enthusiasts who are at the beginning of their "3D journey" like myself.

This book arrrived on time, good condition.
But the overall book is not as good as Jeramy Birn's Lighting and Rendering second edition. But it covers Maya specific techniques.

I read the book pritty much page for page and i found that it was a waste of money. It explained possibly everything their was in the Maya program but it did not say in which way you could execute some of those capabilities that Maya has to offer. Their was like 4 may be 5 pages on lighting and how they differed from each other but never gave any hard evidence on how to use them. If you look at the cover it looks very interesting but from an intermediate to advance user i would not recommend it but even for a beginner i would not recomend it. The best Maya books i would say would be written by Eric keller i would say because he shows you how to do things and explains them step by step which is always good.
