Book Description

28 Jun 2002 0340847123 978-0340847121
The new A level Specifications for Biology require students to carry out experimental and investigative activities; these are to include an element of synoptic work, and carry up to 20% of the overall marks. Four practical skills are clearly identified: devising and planning experiments; demonstrating safe techniques; making observations and measurements; and interpreting, explaining, evaluating and communicating the results.

This part of the new specifications is the one about which teachers and students feel least certain. Conventional textbooks rarely give the practical element more than a cursory glance. This short guide therefore provides students with the help that they need, whether they are taking a practical exam, or answering questions on experiments in a written paper. The first part of the book focuses on the four main skills, the common element for all awarding bodies. There are then chapters covering the individual features of each of the main awarding bodies, to ensure complete coverage.

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical work for Biology 18 Nov 2003
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for my own information and to help me to plan the coursework that I would do with my Biology Classes.
It contains lots of ideas and detailed explanations about how the coursework is assessed. There is a lot of attention paid to the small but important details such as which statistical test to use or how to present your results as well as some marked examples.
It is ideal for both teachers and students. I recommend it!

good section on statistics
Spread too thinly over many exam boards

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for revision, great for teachers 12 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book delivers on what it sets out to. A great "in your face" revision guide, distilled to the basics, with examiners tips and relavent questions. As a teacher, the book provides a potted summary of what the basics are, and a great foundation for students to structure their revision round.
