Aimed at native Chinese speakers rather than Westerners learning Chinese,
By
This review is from: Advanced Level Chinese: A Complete Tutorial (Paperback)
I just got this book and am very disappointed. It looks great, and is exactly what I was looking for to prepare for the A2 examinations, except that everything is in Chinese (simplified characters by the way, not traditional, in case you need to know), including the historical section and the literature section. All the texts are in Chinese (which they should be), but also all the tips and explanations, and it makes this book very hard to use, compared to the Edexcel Chinese for A2 book, unless you have a native speaker on stand-by near you!
When you read the introduction, it is obvious that the author has written this book for native Chinese speakers who want to sit the A Level examinations, rather than Westerners who are reasonably new to the subject. I quote: "To help these students, particularly those who have recently arrived in the West and are unaccustomed to such methods, this book tries its utmost to demonstrate how the approach works" (introduction, p.V) - in other words, the main aim of the book is to explain to Eastern students how to approach and study for the A Level examination. I wish this had been made clearer in the description of the item. In conclusion, if you are already a Chinese speaker who needs coaching for the examination, this book should do the trick. If you are a Westerner studying independently, or someone whose Chinese is good but not extraordinary, only buy it as a complement to the Edexcel textbook.

A Chinese A level book for the Chinese!!,
By
This review is from: Advanced Level Chinese: A Complete Tutorial (Paperback)
As the previous reviewer has pointed out, this book is aimed at native speakers of Chinese that for whatever reason have decided to take the A-level examination.
The book itself is written almost entirely in simplified Chinese characters, with their being virtually no guidance provided in English on how to approach studying for the exam. As one might expect the Chinese characters used are many and varied, and although i have passed my GCSE examination with a high mark, much of what is written is beyond my knowledge. The contents page is one exception and is written in English. This reveals that the book itself covers topics on reading comprehension, translation, essay writing, modern chinese history, geography, philosophy and culture, women and equal rights, and literature. There are also exercises scattered throughout the book with the answers provided at the end, however once again these are written entirely in Chinese. I would therefore conclude that for someone who has recently completed their GCSE studies and wants to move to the next level, this book is completely inappropriate. I would also argue that as an A-level textbook for the non-native speaker it is probably not much better. So unless you perhaps want some final revision material when you are close to the A-Level exam or you are a native Chinese speaker, then i would suggest looking elsewhere for an appropriate textbook.
