Product Description
'Advanced Latin' offers a range of material to help students build and develop the knowledge and skills needed for A2 and Pre-U Latin. There are 24 translation/comprehension exercises, based on passages taken predominantly from Livy, Caesar and Ovid. These match exactly the requirements of A2, but the passages work equally well as unseens for those working towards Pre-U. Six further passages are offered for unseen translation only, and are designed to stretch the most able. There are then 12 passages of continuous prose for translation into Latin, each supported by notes to help the student; and an appendix that contains a comprehensive English-Latin vocabulary. To support the study of A2 and Pre-U literature, there are short commentaries on sample passages from each of the prescribed authors, demonstrating a variety of interpretative approaches. In addition, for each author there is an annotated bibliography, to guide both teacher and student to the most useful secondary literature available. A separate section focuses on the Pre-U unseen literary criticism option and offers six practice passages.
About the Author
Stephen Anderson is Senior Tutor and a former Head of Classics at Winchester College. He has many years' experience of public examining at all levels, was a Syllabus Developer for Pre-U Greek and Latin, and is co-author (with John Taylor) of 'Greek Unseen Translation'. James Morwood is an Emeritus Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford. He has written a number of books on Latin and Greek language and literature and (with Richard Ashdowne) coauthored 'Writing Latin' (also published by Duckworth). Katharine Radice teaches Classics at Westminster School and is an experienced examiner.

Amazon Verified Purchase
Lots of practice passages tailored to the authors on the syllabus up to 2014. A useful chapter about how to approach literary criticism of the set texts too, and some passages for composition into Latin (does anyone still do this?). A useful book for the final preparations for A2. It comes with a "Key" which is simply a set of suggested translations - quite useful, especially for the Latin compositions, but it would have been more helpful to have had suggested answers to the comprehension questions too.
This is a very useful resource for anyone teaching A2 Latin. It has a good collection of unseens and comprehensions and the layout is clearly organised. It would probably not be as usual for students as there are no answers given in here, so you would need someone else to check your work if you were unsure.
There are not many resources out there for us poor Latin teachers so grab this one!
