Product Description

Applied Organometallic Chemistry Vol 14 2000

"...There is no doubt that every chemistry library should have a copy of the comprehensive reference work..."

Product Description

For more than a quarter century, Cotton and Wilkinson′s Advanced Inorganic Chemistry has been the source that students and professional chemists have turned to for the background needed to understand current research literature in inorganic chemistry and aspects of organometallic chemistry. Like its predecessors, this updated Sixth Edition is organized around the periodic table of elements and provides a systematic treatment of the chemistry of all chemical elements and their compounds. It incorporates important recent developments with an emphasis on advances in the interpretation of structure, bonding, and reactivity.

From the reviews of the Fifth Edition:
∗ "The first place to go when seeking general information about the chemistry of a particular element, especially when up–to–date, authoritative information is desired." –Journal of the American Chemical Society.
∗ "Every student with a serious interest in inorganic chemistry should have [this book]." –Journal of Chemical Education.
∗ "A mine of information . . . an invaluable guide." –Nature.
∗ "The standard by which all other inorganic chemistry books are judged."–Nouveau Journal de Chimie.
∗ "A masterly overview of the chemistry of the elements."–The Times of London Higher Education Supplement.
∗ "A bonanza of information on important results and developments which could otherwise easily be overlooked in the general deluge of publications." –Angewandte Chemie.

For the 6th edition of Cotton and Wilkinson's classic text, the authors co-opted their ex-PhD students, Murrillo and Bochmann, to assist with the rewriting. Unfortunately their influence appears to have been entirely negative, as the book is appreciably less useful and less readable than earlier editions. One of the strong points of the 5th edition, the extensive chapters at the back of the book surveying selected topics, have been done away with. They have been replaced by a lifeless chapter or two on catalysis, written without any real authority. Rather than buying this book, I strongly suggest tracking down an earlier edition.

The title of this book should warn people as to the content.
This is an 'Advanced ' inorganic chemistry book. To me, it is of the most value to final year and post-graduate students and students studying at a lower level should consider purchasing another book.
I found it gave a nice introduction into a vast amount of research which is going on today in the field of inorganic chemistry. It also mixes togeter the areas of coordination, organometallic and materials chemistry as well as what could be called pure inorganic chemistry.

I recommend it to all post graduate chemists who wish to develop a more holistic view of their subject rather than finding themselves confined to their own narrow topic. There are full references provided. Even though it is a huge book, it only gives a relatively small amount of detail, so the references are essential. Also, the majority of references are for quite recent publications. While some people say that this book has been butchered since the last edition, I have to disagree, it's a much more exiting read now.

this book is the last helpful edition for the study of transition elements, subsequent editions are useless.
