5.0 out of 5 stars Adultery 30 Aug. 2014
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
To say this is a book about a woman committing adultery is to miss the whole point of the story I feel. Linda lives in Switzerland with her husband and two children - none of whom are ever named. She has a good life, and an interesting job as a journalist and as a family they are financially secure with domestic staff to look after the children and do the housework. Who could want anything more from life?

But Linda is restless and bored. It would be all too easy to dismiss Linda as shallow but she is far more than that. I'm sure many readers will put the book down in disgust saying she should count her blessings and no one could want more in life. Things are not as simple as that. Linda feels she is plodding along from day to day with nothing exciting in her life - everything is just dull. She wonders if she is depressed but she doesn't think she is. She wonders whether she needs to see a psychiatrist but doesn't think that will work either.

It must be difficult to empathise with Linda unless you yourself have felt that sort of restlessness. I have felt it and it resulted in me turning my life upside down and doing some things which maybe were not a good idea though they seemed the only right thing to do at the time. What lesson you take from this strangely absorbing book - because there are lessons to be learned from it even if your life in no way resembles Linda's - are always going to be personal. But what I think is important is to not let yourself slip into a rut because if you get in too deep then the only way out is going to be to upend your life and those of the people you love.

4.0 out of 5 stars FASCINATING STORY INTRIQUINGLY TOLD 6 Sept. 2014
By Gail Cooke TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Gifted audio book narrator/actress Susan Denaker has appeared in a number of plays in the West End of London plus on national tours. She is also remembered for her appearances in the U.S. She delivers a memorable reading of Paulo Coelho's intriguing Adultery, a story in which various themes are explored including marital infidelity, depression, and a smattering of life's imponderables.

A popular newspaper reporter based in Geneva Linda has all the trappings of a perfect life - marriage to handsome, rich financier, attractive, well-behaved children, and a successful career. Why one then wonders when she interviews Jacob, an old boyfriend who is now successful in politics, does she conclude the questioning with a sexual encounter?

Whatever the case this is the beginning of an illicit affair which briefly seems to bring Linda out of her emotional doldrums. At the same time the affair bothers her as she cannot understand what motivated her to do this. She tries therapy and then a Cuban shaman but finds no help with either. Linda simply cannot understand why she is so entranced by Jacob. Eventually his wife comes very close to making their affair public. What will happen next?

Throughout Coelho's narrative he explores much - everything from St. Paul to Jekyll and Hyde. Adultery is an intriguing tale giving us much to ponder.

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed Paulo Coelho's new book Adultery 22 Sept. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed Paulo Coelho's new book Adultery. Once again, as with The Alchemist, he looks into the human condition and asks the question, What makes us happy? The story is about a woman in her thirties who has a loving husband, two beautiful children, a fabulous home and a great job, yet she is not happy and wonders if there is going to be anything more in her life. Is this it? She is in need of excitement but feels guilty, as she knows that she has everything and more than most people could ever want. Paulo understands people so well. He knows how they think, how they look at life, what they expect, what makes them tick and I laughed in places when his thoughts were so in line with my own. When she embarks on her affair she realises that it is not making her any happier, and indeed feels full of guilt. She goes away with her husband for a weekend and manages to find the answer to her question. I would recommend this book to everyone, especially if you enjoyed The Alchemist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sex, but what is the moral of the story? 20 Oct. 2014
By Antax
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An enjoyable read. However I did find at the beginning it was difficult empathy for the main character who seems to have all everyone could desire but is still not satisfied. She seems to feel the need to cheat on her husband mainly for the joy of exciting sex. I would not call it an affair exactly as the meetings seem wholly to do with sex and little else. As a man I did enjoy the descriptions of the sex! However I found it difficult to understand how this then provided her with what she needed to go back to her husband and be happy? This book was very much focused on her with very little thought given to how her actions might affect her husband or her children. I'm not sure what the moral of the story given in this book is, if there is one at all. Is it simply a mid-life crisis? It's a shame I don't get the deeper messages in this book (I'm sure they are there) : I will just remember the sex scenes...and dream on!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking 22 Aug. 2014
Format:Hardcover
Although the title indicates it is about adultery, I feel it is more about the no man's land of mid-life.

The voice of the protagonist - a successful journalist in her mid thirties - slips between apathy, desperation and flashes of wisdom. Sometimes, I feel the voice of Coelho himself, rather than that of the protagonist. Some of the internal monologues about existence and the meaning of life dispersed with quotes from the Bible and other sources seemed more appropriate to a wiser person. However, I found the quotes useful and the description of the condition the woman finds herself in - depressed and apathetic despite her successful life - pretty accurate.

As always, Coelho manages to capture an element of the human condition that resonates deeply with a large number of people.
The internal conflict the protagonist finds herself fighting is also convincing. For, as Henry David Thoreau once said, 'The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.' Indeed we do - and not just men, but women as well. But there is hope.

Not just for fans of Coelho's other books, this novel about the dangers of the modern human condition is well worth a read. His universal style is deceptively simple and impressively accessible. The message? Read it to discover that for yourself.
