Product Description

Review

"Always a good buy, Adult Learning Adult Teaching is very readable and gives the most practical help to tutors of any subject. This fully revised fourth edition, with a number of new sections, brings the book bang up to date. If there was one piece of essential reading I would want for my tutors it would be this book!" -- Margaret Davey, former Principal, City Lit. "...Hellishly practical, this volume is a must for those who want theory and realism in practical teaching...it grounds the esoteric in useable tips and applications" -- Adults Learning."I cannot praise the publication too highly" -- International Journal of Lifelong Education"...should become part of every adult educator's mental furniture" -- Adult Education.

This book was a recommended text for the introductory-level City & Guilds 7307 part 1 teaching course which my wife completed last year. For that course it is a good book, as it gives a fairly broad but shallow introduction to current teaching practice. I don't think it will stand alone for any of the more in-depth teacher-training courses (7307 part 2 and 3, 7407, Cert.Ed./PGCE etc.), though.

It's not a particularly good source of quotes and references for written work but I found it excellent for lists and overviews to help me make sure I covered the right ground in my assignments. Worth getting as a backup, but you will still need a "main" book such as Reece and Walker.

I have used this as a core part of train the trainer programmes for ten years or more. It is a practical, easy to read guide to the realm of adult learning and adult teaching - like it says on the tin. Too often academic books focus on theory and forget that teachers have to be learners first: understanding the way we learn ourselves is key, in my view, to being able to encourage others to learn.
So if you want to train (teach if you must) then learn. And if you run train the trainer courses, use it as the number one handbook.
