5.0 out of 5 stars Practical advice at last, 26 July 2004
By

This book is a welcome addition to the all too few that have been produced on adult dyslexia. As an adult dyslexic myself I was amazed to read something that explained everything that I have experienced over the last 37 years, mainly in relation to the memory and verbal communication problems I've experienced, in contrast to the sometimes condescending comments that you typically read about dyslexia in adulthood. I would have preferred a larger font but that is a minor point - it's better to get practical advice in small font than endless talk about reading problems in large font.

I just hope the authors will write another book soon. Excellent work

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, 12 Aug 2003
By A Customer
This is the best book I've read to date on adult dyslexia. Unlike most books on dyslexia that focus on literacy skills, it specifically addresses the non-literacy problems and, importantly, problems that dyslexics encounter in the workplace. As a dyslexic with a foreign language degree I feel that I've largely overcome my literacy problems. Most people think that dyslexics problems are about reading and writing. If you've mastered these they think your dyslexic has gone away.

What's so good about this book is that it identifies the other difficulties you may experience such as (in my case) remembering long verbal instructions and coping with communicating your thoughts to people when put on the spot. You may be more easily distracted than non-dyslexics and take longer to complete tasks as a result.

The book suggests specific training courses designed for dyslexics, as apposed to more general courses designed for non-dyslexics. Topics cited include learning to control the flow of information coming to you from others.

Having read the book I feel more confident about my abilities and it's given me a framework to think about how I can get what I need from other people. It also includes contact details where you can get help.

I'd thoroughly recommend this book to people with dyslexic, HR personnel and managers. It's a very positive book and I feel much better for reading it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Adult Dyslexia: A Guide for the Workplace, 8 Oct 2002
By
Dr. P.Smith (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adult Dyslexia: A Guide for the Workplace (Hardcover)
This is an excelent book that has practical advice for both professionals and dyslexics themselves. It is very readable and in my experience it is the first text that succeeds in distinguishing adult dyslexics from children with this condition; it presents a very strong case for reassessing the validity of what educationalists say about dyslexia and for improving how dyslexics are accommodated in workplaces.

The chapter on European Law is very informative and outlines important changes that are soon to be introduced into disability anti discrimination legislation.

This book is destined to become essential reading for all HR people as well as adult dyslexics who feel they are not being treated as they should be treated by their employer (or their school/college/university).

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand what adult dyslexia is and what can be done to make it a positive experience.
