Product Description

Product Description

The frequency and severity of personal harrassment is a problem that is only just beginning to be uncovered. In Adult Bullying, psychologist Peter Randall uses the voices of both bullies and victims to reveal the misery that many adults endure.
He describes the processes that turn child bullies into adult bullies, often aware of their behaviour but unable to stop it. The workplace and the neighbourhood replace the playground, but the tactics and patterns of reward remain the same. The adult victim has little or no more power than the child counterpart, often changing jobs to escape the attentions of the bully. Similarly, managers like teachers, often fail to tackle the complaints of the victim with the seriousness the problem deserves, preferring to believe that the fuss is unwarranted.
Adult Bullying will be welcomed by managers, counsellors, social workers and anyone who has experienced personal harrassment. Effective ways to deal with bullying in the community and the workplace are discussed, with particular attention given to the implications for managers and employees.

5.0 out of 5 stars Without a doubt, the best available book on adult bullying, 15 April 2000

This review is from: Adult Bullying: Perpetrators and Victims (Paperback)
Several years ago whilst reading labour studies in Ruskin College, Oxford, I decided to write my dissertation on workplace bullying in the UK retail industry. There were very few books available in 1996 butI was lucky enough to find this publication.

This book summarised the vast bulk of the research available and slanted it to reflect on the authors own personal experience.

I read this publication from cover to cover in just 4 days! It was so well written that I just did not want to put it down until I had finished.

This book deals with the issues of adult bullying from all angles. As somebody who runs a website on the legal issues surrounding workplace bullying I have made it my business to read many publications on this topic, both published and unpublished. Randalls remains at the pinacle.

I would recomend this book to anybody, whether target, bully or academic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compassionate, well researched, alarming and thought provokin, 8 Nov 1998

This review is from: Adult Bullying: Perpetrators and Victims (Hardcover)
Peter Randall has written a book that anyone who has been victimized by bullies or harassers will relate to imediately. He put into words what my rage inside of me feels like I just can't explain it. I've been a victim of corporate bullying until I finally had a nervous breakdown. When I found this book it was like Peter Randall had been following me around for 2 years and then put all these horrible stories together. Plain and simple he hit the nail on the head with this one. There's alot to learn and take from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adult Bullying - Perpetrators and Victims, 1 Jan 2008
By D. Corning "purplewoman" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Adult Bullying: Perpetrators and Victims (Paperback)
Peter Randall's book, Adult Bullying - Perpetrators and Victims, is a "must read" for everyone. As a person who has been the victim of bullies, both in the work place and personally, I found the book very beneficial in understanding why some people become victims and other bullies. The case histories were interesting, as were the proposed interventions.

As good as the book was, there were a few problems. Randall makes the point of the bully's responsibility and that the victim needs to understand how he or she is contributing to the situation. However, I think he could have done more with discussing the responsibility of others, both those who join in with the bully and those who simply try to ignore what is going on. For example, he points out that others may feel that the victim deserves the bullying because the victim is not strong enough to stop the bully. However, from personal experience, I know that for some people it is more that they do not want the bully going after them. Also, while many of the case studies and descriptions of interventions are transferable to America, there are clearly some cultural differences that were a little distracting. A little explanation in those instances would have been helpful.

Overall, this is definitely a "must-read" book, whether you have been a victim, a bully, or a by-stander.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adult Bullying: Perpetrators and Victims, 5 Nov 2007
By K. J. Burt - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Adult Bullying: Perpetrators and Victims (Paperback)
I bought this book to understand what drives Workplace Bullying and what creates a Bully. It was very helpful but I thought some of the case studies lacked cohesion. It was also written in a very academic style, which is fine, but makes it a bit more difficult to read.
