With a PhD in English Literature and a staggeringly poor sense of direction that meant he was well acquainted with sojourns off the beaten track, Adrian Phillips almost inevitably fell into a career in travel writing. He spent six months travelling around Hungary exclusively gathering research for the Bradt guides to Hungary and Budapest. It was certainly a significant labour of love, and when the books were finished Adrian was voted Guidebook Writer of the Year by the British Guild of Travel Writers. Both books are now in their second editions, having recently been thoroughly updated and put into a pretty new design with heaps more photos. Adrian now works as Publishing Director at Bradt Travel Guides during the day, but devotes holidays, evenings and weekends putting pen to paper (or, more accurately, grubby paw to keypad). He writes regularly about travel for national newspapers and magazines (including The Independent on Sunday and Wanderlust), is a judge for the annual Bradt-Independent on Sunday Travel-Writing Competition, and also does the odd bit of broadcasting along the way.
