This is the definitive book for UK adopters. As far as I can tell, most of the books here on Amazon about adoption are by US authors and detail the US system (obviously). This one takes you through the UK process step by step and has all the contact details you could possibly need. It also covers alternatives to adoption that I had not known existed.

It's up to date and realistic. Read this book before any others.

This book is excellent for anybody at the early stages of adoption who want to know how the process works. It is brief and to the point but follows the process extremely well and is very informative.

It is also fantastic that it lists the alternative agencies available to investigate before commiting to one agency.

I would highly recommend this book to anybody thinking about adoption.Adopting a Child: A Guide for People Interested in Adoption

Being part of the BAAF series this was bound to be the most reliable source of information about the adoption process as a whole. It guides the reader through the various types of adoption and how a child comes to find themselves in that situation. What it doesn't tell you is the reality of adopting. The fact that having made first inquiries you can expect to wait two years before you are at the home assessment stage. Yes there is an 8 time scale from the preparation classes until panel have to make a decision about whether to approve you or not, but it doesn't tell you that the preparation classes are about 8 months after you initially enquire. It also doesn't tell you the avarage wait until you are matched to a child.
Have said all that, it does thoroughly explain what will be expected of you at each stage. Buy it as a guide to the adoption process, but also buy a book written by someone who have experienced the adoption process and come out the other side, e.g. Flying Solo about single adopters.
