Product Description

BBC Review

Last year was the 250th anniversary of the birth of Scotland’s best-loved poet, Robert Burns, and this fresh and upbeat album is a welcome contribution to the continuing celebrations.

It’s impressive both because Emily Smith’s powerfully straightforward, no-nonsense but emotional approach very much echoes the style of the great man himself, and because her instrumental work, and that of the versatile Jamie McClennan, provides an entertainingly contemporary setting for Burns’ memorable lyrics.

It was only to be expected that Smith would record an album devoted entirely to Burns. A major force on the Scottish folk scene for some time, she was born and raised in Dumfries, not far from where Burns died. 2008’s Too Long Away included a cool, confident treatment of Burns’ As I Was Wand’Ring, and it seemed then that more such experiments were to follow.

Smith and McClennan had originally intended to concentrate only on songs that Burns wrote in, or about Dumfriesshire, but they ended up with a broader selection. Lesser-known pieces sit beside traditional songs that he collected or adapted, and a new setting for one of his best-loved and most political songs, A Man’s a Man For a’ That, is included. Many arrangements make use of traditional melodies, though Lassie Lie Near Me is now treated as a gentle lullaby, with a new melody written by Smith.

Burns was a complex and a controversial figure, and the songs here concentrate on two sides of his character and writing. He was a womanizer, but a champion of the rights of women, and the writer of ardent and passionate love songs in which he dared to lay bare his feelings. So in the cheerfully upbeat title track he praises the beauty of Phillis McMurdo, while Gowden Locks O Anna (“the best love song I ever composed in my life,” said Burns) was written for a Dumfries barmaid with whom he fathered a child. Then there are songs from the woman’s point of view, from the cheerful The Plooman to the racier story of Soldier Laddie, and in contrast to all of these there are equally emotional stories of war, parting and return.

This is an album that proves, again, that Smith ranks alongside Julie Fowlis as one of Scotland’s great young traditional singers. She’s a great instrumentalist, too, playing accordion and piano alongside McClennan’s guitar, fiddle, whistle and mandolin. One suspects that Burns would have been impressed. --Robin Denselow

Heart Warming Burns ! 24 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Emily Smith continues to reaffirm her position as one of Britain's best singers. She is a songwriter who sticks very closely to the traditional folk music of her native Scotland. This CD is a departure however in that it is a celebration of the work of Scotland's most famous poet, Robert Burns and contains no originals.

The recordings feature 11 songs either collected or written by Burns and like similar other recent ventures poetic licence is used to change lyrics, add verses or adapt music. It all works wonderfully. Smith's voice is very sweet and very pure and is particularly suited to mid and up tempo songs. She's also a multi-instrumentalist (as is Jamie McClennan her co-conspirator on this release) so she has a lovely rhythmic lilt which gives her an advantage over many other "specialist" vocalists.

There are a number of excellent tracks here and perhaps wisely Smith has avoided duplicating any of the tracks recorded by Eddi Reader on her outstanding release of Burns' songs from a few years ago. With it's spare acoustic backing (understated and more effective because of that) it's a nice alternative to Reader's more "polished" recording. I can heartily recommend both if you want a general overview of the best of Burns. I harbour one slight doubt though that Smith's voice is actually too sweet and that a stronger grittier singer may be preferable on 2 or 3 of the numbers here but this will not stop me returning time and again to this delightful record.

This is the 4th album from award-winning Scottish folk singer Emily Smith. It's an album of songs written by Robert Burns, and so the album works well both as an introduction to the beautiful singing of Emily and the fine songwriting of Burns. Of course, the lyrics are written in the 18th century Scots tongue that Burns used, but a helpful glossary is included in the CD sleevenotes for those unfamiliar with the dialect!

On the album, equal billing is given to Emily's husband and musical collaborator, Jamie McLennan.

Stand out tracks:

Silver Tassie (also featured in the Transatlantic Sessions 4 TV series)
Gowden Locks O' Anna
The Plooman
A Man's A Man for A That

Just saw them in concert at Blackheath Halls in London last night. It was a wonderfully warm and engaging show and this disc is the perfect souvenir. Very impressive talents - both of them.
