Product Description

Product Description

Growing numbers of young men are taking the quest for perfect muscles, skin and hair too far, crossing the line from normal interest to pathological obsession. The authors of this text, all leading authorities, aim to help the reader understand and combat the frightening set of compulsive behaviours that make up the Adonis Complex. Combining colourful case studies with scientific research, they reveal a threat that is as serious as the beauty myth for women or anorexia nervosa for girls. The symptoms of this dangerous body obsession - excessive workouts, steroid abuse, eating disorders and body and muscle dysmorphic disorder (distorted body perception) - lead to problems with sex and intimacy, relationships and work. In teenagers, the Adonis Complex can interfere with healthy emotional and physical development.

4.0 out of 5 stars I was sad to reach the final chapter., 24 May 2000
By jimka@rdrop.com (Munich Germany) - See all my reviews
The authors' opinions were not really what I expected before starting reading. This book is primarily concerned about a disorder called Body Dismorphism Disorder BDD. Some of the documented extreme cases of the disorder are shocking, and some of the argument suporting the thesis are compelling. I found the book very thought provoking, and would recommended to others.

However, several things bothered me about the book. In particular the book attacks the issue of steroids in a non-conventional way. By disspelling the common myths, it is perhaps encouraging their use. The book is primarily aimed at the heterosexual public, and is biased heavily toward the heterosexual reader. This bias makes some of the authors' arguments less than convincing, in that I tended to seriously doubt the validity of his assumtions from the beginning. I think the high percent of gay men in health clubs is not statically insignificant. And the question of "What does the opposite sex think about my body?" is not as relavent to the general audiance as the authors assume.

These issues I take with the book did not in anyway lessen my enjoyment reading it.

I liked this book a lot. I bought it because I think that I probably think more about my body than most other people--but maybe not. colourful writing style.

5.0 out of 5 stars A SECRET UNVEILED...., 21 Feb 2008
By CAPTAIN HABZ! (LONDON United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
AN EXCELLENT BOOK THAT COVERS ALL THE ASPECTS OF HOW MEN THINK ABOUT THIER BODIES FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. THIS BOOK GREATLY HELPED ME IN COMPLETING MY DEGREE DISSERTATION BASED ON ANABOLIC STEROIDS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH.IT REFLECTS ON MANY REALISTIC ASPECTS THAT MANY GYM USERS GO THROUGH. PERSONALLY I STRONGLY RECOMMEND MALE PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS EVEN THOSE IN GENERAL TO PURCHASE THIS TO EDUCATE AND UNDERSTAND JUST HOW MUCH SOCIETY HAS CHANGED FROM WOMEN BEING THE TYPICAL SUBJECTS OF BODY IMAGE FREAKS TO MEN WHO UNDERTAKE DANGEROUS SIDE TURNS THAT EXTREMELY GOES BEYOND THAT OF ANOREXIA AND OTHER BODY DISORDERS.
