Unusably buggy 6 May 2010
By Paul W TOP 500 REVIEWER
Dreamweaver CS5 became unusably buggy on my Vista 64 bit machine. I switched a few weeks ago back to Dreamweaver CS4 which despite its issues is perfectly usable and doesn't crash like CS5.

Every machine is different but for my otherwise working well machine Dreamweaver CS5 was a waste of money.

I did report issues to Adobe but a week later have not heard back.

------ UPDATE ----

A month ago I wiped clean my machine and installed Windows 7 64bit. I hoped this might solve the Dreamweaver issue. Sadly not - still unusable due to bugs. Much more reliable on pages which are just simple HTML and no code. Pages with ASP code crash randomly and often when least expected.

I would guess 32bit version might be more reliable but never tested this scenario.

Back to good old reliable CS4!

----- Review -----

I've been using Dreamweaver for many years but this have proved to be the most bug ridden and unusable version yet!

Things started off well for the first few weeks of use but then I was just using it for basic web design - no coding.

Over the last 4 or 5 days approx it has crashed so often its become usuable. While it can work for maybe and hour or maybe a few hours its crashes are unpredicable and have resulted in me losing work and wasting time.

Whether its the latest Adobe updates that have caused this - I notice a Flash update was installed around the time it became unusable - I don't know.

I don't believe this is effecting all users - but looking at the Adobe forums it seems it could be those with 64bit versions of Windows who are most effected. One user on the forums with Vista 64 reports Dreamweaver CS5 crashing 13 times in one day - which sounds similar to my experience.

What makes it tough is I can't honestly say what causes it or what to avoid to stop it crashing. It crashed again just a few minutes ago while I was in code view typing in some very basic ASP code defining variables. Pretty safe stuff I'd have thought but apparently not!

I would guess there will be lots of people - esp with Windows 32 bit - who won't have any problems.

I'll be returning to Adobe CS4 or Dreamweaver 8 and hope that Adobe might fix the bugs. Though I have to say this is unlikely - all the time I owned Dreamweaver CS4 they didn't release one update or bug fix!

Superb! 24 July 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I've only been using DW for a couple of months now, having switched from NetObjects Fusion, and I'm absolutely delighted that I made the move. While it might not be as easy as some products to get a first website up and running, the results are great and you really feel like you're in control whereas with lesser products you feel you're trying to coerce them into doing what you want.

If you're not up to creating superb websites with fancy navigation from scratch (and I'm not) there are many templates and 'widgets' you can buy to get up and going quickly. I found that one of the very basic templates that came with DW did exactly what I wanted so I haven't needed to buy any 3rd party add-ons yet.

I'm running on Windows XP SP3 so I'm not having any of the crashes or 64-bit issues reported by other reviewers.

As a new user, I can't say if it's worth the upgrade from CS4. But I can say that DW CS5 is a superb product and I'd recommend it to anyone. You'll need more HTML and CSS knowledge than with products which hide these from you, so buy a couple of books to help you.

I wish DW wasn't so expensive. I tried to buy it online in US dollars, but Adobe won't allow anyone outside the US to do that. In the end I bought a box copy from Amazon.co.uk which was the best price I could find. I think I'd describe nearly £400 as "fair value" rather than "good value".
