Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Adobe's document standard is an essential part of the computing landscape. PDF stands for "Portable Document Format", and its primary achievement is to preserve document layout and appearance so that it looks right and prints correctly wherever it is viewed. Anyone can read a PDF using the free Acrobat reader, but with the full version of Acrobat you can create and modify documents, encrypt and secure them and take advantage of a host of additional features.

Acrobat 6.0 Professional has an enhanced user interface along with several important new features. It's easier than ever to convert documents and a neat new feature is the ability to combine several source documents into a single PDF. It's also possible to scan documents directly into Acrobat. Once they're converted, you can touch up the content and add interactive forms or multimedia elements.

Acrobat 6.0 Professional has a greatly improved system for reviewing and commenting, so that a PDF can be e-mailed or posted to a Web location where others can suggest changes. Acrobat 6.0 Standardcan gather all the comments into a new document and each change can be approved or rejected.

Another vital area is security: a PDF can be password-protected or digitally signed to authenticate its content. You can also add trusted certificates to the document, enabling selected individuals to make amendments. A PDF can be exported in a variety of formats and you can create special versions for reading on a Palm or Pocket PC. Accessibility is also a key issue and Acrobat 6.0 Professional includes automatic scrolling, a read-out-loud feature and advice on creating accessible documents.

The preflight and preview features in Acrobat 6.0 Professional are a must-have for those working in the print and design industry. Preflight analyses a document to check its validity for print production. Documents are validated against a profile, specifying rules such as the minimum or maximum resolution of bitmaps, whether fonts are embedded and which types of colour or page elements are permitted. Profiles are fully editable, and you can also test for PDF/X compliance, where PDF/X is an ISO standard for exchanging PDF documents.

Acrobat 6.0 Professional also supports colour management using ICC (International Color Consortium) profiles. You can view colour proofs on-screen and preview print separations. There is also control over transparency flattening, which is where overlapping transparent objects are converted into separate pieces.

Another aspect of Acrobat is especially important for technical drawing. Acrobat 6.0 Professional supports layers in documents converted from Visio or AutoCAD. These drawing packages typically create large documents and there are special navigation and printing tools to make them easier to work with. Many applications can now export in PDF format, with or without Acrobat installed, but for optimised output and to take full advantage of the format's features Acrobat is highly recommended. --Tim Anderson

Streamline proofing cycles with robust electronic tools that now let you automatically track, manage, and incorporate feedback. Improved viewing and navigation tools make working with detailed artwork or other large-format documents easier than ever. Output PDF/X-compliant files, and help eliminate surprises at the printer by preflighting files and previewing and printing color separations.

  • Enhanced file viewing and navigation. View two areas of a large drawing simultaneously by using a split-pane view. Zoom in on unreadable areas without affecting the magnification level of the rest of the document.

2.0 out of 5 stars Intrusive and Slow, 23 Oct 2003

This review is from: Acrobat 6.0 Professional Win (CD-ROM)
Be warned: this latest release of Acrobat continues Adobe's aggressive trend of intruding into your desktop environment, this time without providing an easy way to undo the damage once its done. Like earlier releases, this version of Acrobat adds startup macros and new toolbar buttons to your existing applications and adds menu entries to your desktop "right click" menus. Adobe argues that these are conveniences, but they are entirely unnecessary (for most of us "printing" to Adobe PDF achieves the same result, is much more convenient, and a more natural model), and clutter what for most users is either a too-crowded user interface (for those who don't have the knowledge or patience to customize it) or a carefully tuned one (for those who do). Unlike many well-behaved applications that provide obvious ways of avoiding this kind of intrusive and disruptive behavior (e.g. through a simple checkbox option in a settings dialog), Acrobat's "option" for disabling this behavior are deeply hidden in the setup process. To disable the "Convert to Adobe PDF" button that mysteriously appears in the Outlook mail editor, for example, one has to be sure to choose "this feature will not be available" from the "Microsoft Outlook" option under "Acrobat PDFMaker" under "Create Adobe PDF". Simply deleting the button using Outlook's toolbar customization feature will not work: it comes right back when the editor is next opened. Similar problems arise in Word, Excel, Visio, Project, and Internet Explorer. And there's simply no way to get rid of the never-used "Convert to Adobe PDF" and "Combine in Acrobat..." entries in that appear in the desktop context menus for files (even if one installs none of the Acrobat PDFMaker features).

In short, Acrobat will make a mess of your working environment, there's no way to completely fix it, and even the partial fix is a pain (and not well documented). (This may seem a minor issue, but if every application followed Adobe's reckless example, our working environments would start to look like strip malls, crowded with features screaming for our attention to the point where it is hard to find what we need when we need it. One of the great strengths of the personal computer desktop is that users can configure it in ways that suit their needs; no application should interfere with that.)

Experienced Acrobat users will also notice that this version continues another frustrating trend for Acrobat (and most other Adobe applications): it is yet again slower to launch than the previous version. In fact, on my 2 GHz Pentium 4, it takes longer to launch than the entire Visual Studio .NET development environment, and longer than the boot sequence for Windows XP!

There are other minor problems as well (arbitrary rearrangements of menu and tool bar items, etc.) but these two major flaws are more than bad enough. Unless you really need the latest Acrobat features, you should probably avoid this upgrade. And if the "improvements" in this release are any indication of where Adobe plans to go with future releases, it may be time to start looking elsewhere for a tool for digital document management.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok to do the job you want but..., 12 July 2005

This review is from: Acrobat 6.0 Professional Win (CD-ROM)
I have been using this software to convert documents from scanner to PDF format and also merge several PDF documents (which I think they have this facility in Acrobat Reader 5). Consider that you have to pay well over £100, I don't think it's worth it. Why? Because it's slow, unstable, insulting (you just can't remove the tool from IE & Microsoft Office toolbar unless you uninstalled Adobe Professional completely!). Ok, it's great because you could combine multiple documents and allow you to edit PDF documents, but I would suggest you all to think twice before you buy it. There are lots of freeware out there which can convert any documents to PDF.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Collaboration Tool, 9 Nov 2003
    By
User from Hampshire (Tadley, Hampshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Acrobat 6.0 Professional Win (CD-ROM)
Acrobat 6.0 Pro is a big step forward from 5. Firstly the user interface is a fantastic improvement. Tools are easy to find and the layout intuitive.

As a designer, I found the seperation and flattening tool ideal before sending jobs to print. Also the creation of PDF/X files is useful - I'm making sure my printer adopts this standard so that I can can ensure greater output reliability.

But the biggest improvement has to be the collaboration tools. Using the email based review means that I can solicit several clients feedback on a single document simultaneously. This has dramatically reduced my artwork review cycle with clients and delivered more reliable feedback that can be actioned more quickly.
