Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

John Paul Caponigro specialises in compositional landscape photomontages which he creates in Photoshop, superimposing rocks and stones, cloud forms, water and lighting effects with landscape backdrops. His compositions are executed with a high degree of technical competence and in Adobe Photoshop Master Class he describes his methods.

There is a basic introduction to technical concepts at the beginning of the book and each chapter provides specific instruction on how to achieve a particular effect. But the bulk of the book is devoted to Caponigro's thoughts on "visual problem solving". At their most practical, these deal with techniques for converting colour images to black and white, extending dynamic range, creating duotones and digitally simulating alternative photographic processes.

Caponigro then attempts to explain the purpose of his compositions. If you're a fan, these are the parts of the book you will find most illuminating; others may find the tone a touch precious.

Caponigro on technique is fine--"Never forget light. If you photograph an object from many angles without rotating the object ... the direction of light in the separate images will not be cast from a consistent angle ... the separate images will no longer share a single reality".

Caponigro on his own work--"The land encloses the figure. The figure encloses the land. Who's pregnant with whom? The earth with the woman, or the woman with the earth? A portion of us is made of earth. A portion of the earth is made of us. One gives voice to the other". Excruciating. --Ken McMahon --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

When I received this book I was excited, for I wanted to learn how to master Adobe Photoshop 6. I am familiar with the basics and interface, though it took me a couple of long months to understand the basics and I am now confident in learning the special effects in depth. Like image editing and water effects amazes me.

Adobe Photoshop Master Class is for beginners and intermediate level. Really for anybody who is willing to learn more complex techniques. John Paul Caponigro cleverly shows the techniques at a high level of complexity. I easily picked up the techniques and it is easy to digest. Section after section until you have tackled all the tutorials with ease and with confidence. 'But at first you don't succeed try, try again'. You can easily come back and continue where you previously left off. The book is well laid out, with illustrations showing what happens on the screen as you are following the tutorials and contains descriptive simple instructions for you to follow. The start of the book presents the introduction of the basic techniques, refreashing your memory. I like that section because it reminds you of what the concepts turned out like, and it's easy to refer while your mind is elsewhere thinking about something else.

Then there's the main section containing various special effects and new tricks in which you have to follow and complete. I particular like when Caponigro explains the purpose of compositions, why it's relevant etc.

I think it is a great book to purchase, your sure to learn quite a bit and it will occupy your spare time, it's a must for eager learners. It's well presented, easy to refer, easy to pick up, from beginners level onwards to intermediate. It's a must for your collection. Recommended for Adobe Photoshop 6 users.

The art not the gimmicks of Photoshop 16 Oct 2000
By Charles W. Stevenson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The shelves are loaded with books about Photoshop. Now with the release of 6.0, there will be many more. Unfortunately nearly all of these books focus exclusively on how to use this powerful and complex tool. Very little is said about the artistic and creative potential that it contains. Unfortunately, just because you can do something with Photoshop, it doesn't mean that you should.

This book is diferent! Mr. Caponigro approaches Photoshop as a painter approaches his canvas and palette. The book is profusely illustrated with examples of the beauty that can be created in this new world of digital image manipulation. Not only does it illustrate the results that can be obtained, but it also gives a concise explanation of the tools used. Furthermore, The book reflects the changes of release 6.0.

"Master Class" is well worth owning for its beauty even if you are not a Photoshop user. Looking at these illustrations however, will certainly encourage many to embark on the journey toward mastery of this exciting new artistic medium.

How an artist uses Photoshop 18 Feb 2001
By Bill Hilton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I first saw John Paul Caponigro's images 3 years ago and thought he was an exceptional artist. His book describes some of the Photoshop techniques he uses to create his art, a melding of traditional photography with digital techniques. I especially enjoyed the chapters on creating atmospheric perspective, compositing images, creating shadows and generating symmetry. He also offers a different perspective on how to use many of the Photoshop tools.

This is not a book for a beginner wanting to learn Photoshop ('Classroom in a Book' is my suggestion), nor perhaps for an intermediate (I recommend 'Photoshop Artistry') but for someone who is familiar with the program and who wants to learn the techniques of a highly skilled artist 'Master Class' is a good choice. Some may find his musings on his artistic choices too Zen-like but if you like his art you'll probably love the book. I certainly did.

A goldmine 29 Aug 2001
By F. Neunemann - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
John Paul Caponigro's books is a most refreshing addition to the vast array of Photoshop books available today. Crammed full with hands on, most competent technical advice (e.g. on how to get your whole computer setup properly calibrated) this books is full of creative and inspiring ideas for photographers who like to add some more digital "punch" to their work.
Today we are getting drowned in PhotoShop "How-To", "Magic" and all sorts of titles, but there are only very, very few books for those who are looking for new ways to solve problems and get more out of their photos using Adobe Photoshop.
This book is especially useful for landscape photographers, but Caponigro's ideas can be transferred to other subject areas as well. Many of John Paul Caponigro's images are outright Daliesque (surrealistic) and can start an avalanche of new ideas in one's brain.
A most profitable read for many photographers, but it definitely is no book for PhotoShop beginners. A definite 5-star...
