Adobe Photoshop wiped the floor with the opposition years ago and is now the de facto industry standard image editing software. This latest version, Photoshop CS5, has proved to be a significant update, with some useful new features that save time and further boost productivity. Although Photoshop CS5's full retail price is steep, Adobe's education discounted prices are more reasonable. This educational licence is for those on a 2 year+ course, in school or work in education. See Adobe's website and your college IT shop for more details to ensure you qualify for this student/teacher version before buying. Adobe don't offer education discounts for upgrades, here you get a full licensed copy of top of the range `Photoshop CS5 Extended for `non-commercial' use only. Although Photoshop CS5's myriad of image editing features require considerable effort for newcomers to master, particularly compared to the cut-down budget version 'Adobe Photoshop Elements 9', there's plenty of on-line help and even videos to aid you.

At Adobe's website you can download a fully functional 30 day timed trial copy of Photoshop CS5 [or say Photoshop Elements 9 or Adobe Creative Suite CS5] to see if it suites your needs - I'd download it on a college PC though as it can be a massive 1Gb+ download. This Photoshop CS5 Extended version adds in 3D and image analysis tools that might be useful over standard Photoshop CS5 [and all standard CS5 tools are included]. For those upgrading, Photoshop CS4 had many useful interface improvements that carry over into CS5, so those on Photoshop CS3 or older would particularly benefit from this CS5 upgrade [and your old educational licenced copy of say Photoshop CS3 would still be valid on another PC, provided the user qualifies].

Major new features in CS5 include better intelligent edge detection for selecting, cutting out and pasting complex shapes [i.e. hair, and it blends the pasted bit in for you], the 'puppet warp tool' which imposes a mesh onto objects to do sophisticated transformations [to say curl up an elephants trunk], and 'content aware fill' added to the spot healing brush to greatly improve removal of dust/hairs, blemishes, unwanted objects etc from photos and replace them with colour and shade matched pixels derived from nearby regions of the image. You could do all of this manually with older versions of Photoshop, but it could take ages. Context aware fill doesn't always work perfectly, although retracing the object to be deleted often helps and the results with the likes of natural scenes with lakes, clouds and woodland are impressive. There's also a new `mixer' brush which mimics natural paint brush shapes and produces various `painting' effects (although it's still no match for Corel Painter 11, that also qualifies for educational discounts). Black and white conversion from colour images is also 'improved'. Plus `Adobe bridge' media file management has been updated, and now allows a customizable panel within Photoshop.

Those working with RAW images will benefit from better noise reduction and lens distortion correction algorithms, utilising the photos EXIF info and an internal database of various SLR lenses. There's also improved support for creating HDR images. Plus all the old Photoshop CS tools are present, such as layer masks that enable you to non-destructively partially visualize areas of your layers, and the ability to write macros [Actions] for automating repetitive tasks [important features lacking from Photoshop's cut-down Elements 8, and Photoshop CS5 is simply more responsive than Elements 8 in use]. Plus integration with Adobe Light-Room has apparently been made tighter. The CS5 grey interface is similar to CS4s. As with CS4, CS5 can use a [compatible] graphics card CPU to further boost processing speed, although with both my workstation NVidia graphics card Photoshop CS4/5 signals a problem and switches this feature off. Otherwise, so far CS5 has proved glitch free on my XP Pro workstation, but Adobe issue regular patches in any case.

Photoshop can now be installed as 32-bit or 64-bit [Vista/Windows]. With the 64-bit versions you will need more system RAM above the 32-bit 3.2Gb limit to see any benefit. Those with 64-bit Windows 7 and 8Gb system RAM should see 40% performance [speed] improvements. Minimum system requirements are Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon 64 processor, Windows XP [SP3], Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows 7, 1GB of RAM, 1 GB of hard-disk space, 1024x768 display (1280x800 recommended) with qualified hardware-accelerated OpenGL 256Mb 16-bit color graphics card, DVD-ROM drive, QuickTime 7.6.2 software, and Broadband Internet connection for online services. However for fluid image editing the more powerful the system the better [and adding more system RAM is generally the most cost effective way of boosting Photoshop responsiveness].

I am thrilled with Amazon and their customer services. Adobe was not as helpful as it took 2 email and 11 days for Adobe to activate this product. Adobe said it would take 2 to 3 day. I found that untrue. I have used Elements 3 and 4. Adobe 6 and 7. CS2 CS4 and now CS5. I am delighted with the product and its new items in CS5. As long as you know what you are doing it is a brilliant product. Again, I am so delighted I purchased this product from Amazon as their customer services was first class in trying to solve the problem of trying to get this product activated. Well done Amazon. I did the right thing by trusting you and not purchasing on Ebay. Im a very happy customer with you and the product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible New Features 26 April 2010
By A. GILL VINE™ VOICE
==============
== VERSIONS ==
==============
There was 64bit support in CS4, but only for Windows. It's now included for Macs too.
This review was based on my Photoshop CS5 64bit version, the program now comes
in the 2 different versions (32bit and 64bit) as people move gradually to 64bit systems.
If you've no idea what i am talking about then 32bit should be fine. Both are on the disc.

===============
== INTERFACE ==
===============
Very small change but the icons have been redrawn and look slightly different. Not a big
change but i noticed it, and was pleased with it :D

Overall interface is very familiar, the workspace switch menu is always displayed at the
top instead of being hidden in the Window menu. If you make a change to your workplace, and
then switch to another workspace, the changes made to the first will remain intact.

The Mini-Bridge is a window which allows complete access to your image files via Bridge,
without leaving Photoshop. Just like the full Bridge you can choose display options, if you
need the full features of Bridge just click the icon at the top of the screen.

=================
== PERFORMANCE ==
=================
The system requirements state at least a Pentium 4 or Athlon 64 processor and 1GB RAM and
disk space. Everyone should have more than enough, but your monitor's resolution should
ideally be at least 1280x800 which not everybody will have. Might be time for a new display.

On my i7 2.8ghz 6GB RAM it performed very smoothly, and i noticed it managed to complete tasks
quite a lot faster than when using it on an old core 2 duo machine with 2GB RAM. Although there
were no problems on that either, its simply a more powerful system provides faster results. I read
somewhere that 64bit with 8GB RAM gave a 40% performance increase, make of that what you will, but
i think its clear that if you want to get the most out of this the 64bit version is needed.

========================
== CONTENT-AWARE FILL ==
========================
This new feature gets its own section, because its pretty incredible. It's in the spot healing brush
section. The spot healing brush is great for removing odd blemishes, bits and bobs, but it struggled
with larger objects. Content-Aware fill makes much more intelligent decisions about what to fill
the area with. It's not perfect, but it worked spectacularly in all my photos providing realistic
results. Without this, you'd have to do lengthy manual cloning techniques.

You use it by selecting an area of the background layer and pressing delete. Instead of replacing the area
with a colour block, it fills it in by cloning various parts of the image. Your results will depend on
what type of content you are working with, for natural environments its amazingly effective, it does a good
job for straight lines too, but i found it struggled with some man made objects. All in all, it's a great
time saving feature, works most of the time, but you may need to follow up with the spot heal brush sometimes.

==================
== NEW FEATURES ==
==================
= The Extended version has great 3D support which can go from 2D to 3D with a few clicks
(great for logos and icons, or to use in print and video projects.)
= One word, RAW. The noise reduction has increased greatly.
= Lens correction has automatic correction by referencing photo's EXIF data against SLR lens profiles
(the current database of lens' was small, but it will grow with time no doubt). You can also create
your own profiles using Adobe's free Lens Profile creator.
= New mixer brush, a hybrid between painting and smudging, emulates natural brush strokes very well.
Control over bristles, wet/dry brush and canvas' makes everything much more interesting
= Edge Detection and Decontaminate Colours (in refine edges box) constructed sharp lines & soft edges
as needed, they even picked out hair strands with great accuracy.
= Smarter & Easier Masking
= Puppet Warp tool imposes a wire-frame mesh onto objects, this can be stretched/skewed by adding and
dragging pins. I tried it with a wooden doll like in the adverts and it worked really well.
= HDR Pro - CS4 had this, but CS5 takes it further with sliders to control Vibrance, Saturation,
Exposure, Detail, and more. This allows you to create very personalized results which could be subtle or dramatic.
If you only have 1 image, HDR toning emulates the results.
= SAVE AS option remembers last folder you navigated to now!

===================================
== PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS & STANDARD ==
===================================
I don't think some of the better features such as Content-Aware fill will be making it into the Photoshop Elements
version. It sounds right as the program is aimed it beginners. The next Photoshop Elements will probably be lacking in the
features that make Photoshop CS5 a worthwhile upgrade. If you are deciding on which one to buy, just keep that in mind.
The Extended version has 3D support, if you will not be needing this feature you could save money and get the Standard edition.

================
== CONCLUSION ==
================
Filled with small tweaks and enhancements. They do add up and provide a smoother work-flow experience, there is a lot
more convenience now, and if you do this for a living, the creative potential has increased dramatically. If your main
tasks are with masks and cloning, or you deal with low light photography, or are into painting, then the time/effort saving,
RAW 6 availability and new Mixer Brush on CS5 could be a worthwhile upgrade for you. For CS3 users the upgrade should be very
appealing, i say go for it. For everyone else on CS4, it's not a necessary upgrade.

As usual though, read up on everything, see what is available, and make an informed decision to see if upgrading to CS5 would/could
benefit you. There are lots of versions, which will suit different people. If you use a couple of Adobe programs, it might be worth
getting the Creative 5 Suite rather than buying each application seperatley.
