Reviews of 'Adobe Photoshop 7 for Photographers':

'For this reviewer the stand-out title from this current crop is Martin Evening's 'Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for Photographers'. Evening's offering eschews all the 'geeky' phraseology that mars the bulk of Photoshop books and instead focuses directly on the issues of interest to photographers... Definitely the 'daddy' of all Photoshop books.'
British Journal of Photography

'...if you own one book about Photoshop 7, this is the one to buy...' Rangefinder

'Anyone serious about using Photoshop needs to get a manual to demonstrate its depth and abilities. This is that book. Its writing and blending of images, and keywords embedded in the text, make you want to hold the book with one hand and try out the features with the other.'
Sunday Herald, The Nova Scotian

"...a super intro to the digital darkroom from the photographer's point of view." Professional Photographer

"If your goal is to expand your technical, image editing, and artistic abilities, then Adobe Photoshop for Photographers most likely will help you achieve the high quality results you desire." PC Create IT

'Among the references I consult most often is... Martin Evening's 'Adobe Photoshop 7 for Photographers', it offers outstanding information, techniques, examples from the author's professional photo assignments, and includes a CD with tutorials.' eDIGITALPHOTO

"This is a very good book for any photographer who is interested in digital photography. Many photographers are now switching to digital with even hardened film users scanning in slides for archiving, re-touching or just being creative." Amazon.com reviewer

"...book focuses on Photoshop from a photographer's point of view rather than from a graphic designer's. There are many tips for beginners and advanced users alike. Highly recommended for all photographers wanting to learn Photoshop." Amazon.com reviewer

"The steps for just about anything you'd want to do creatively are short, easy to follow, and are accompanied by excellent demonstration photos. The book is in full color, which is extremely important given the subject matter." Amazon.com reviewer

"I highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to take digital photographs and do artistic and wonderful things with them." Amazon.com reviewer

"If you need to learn Photoshop, get the 'Classroom' book. If you want your photos to literally come alive in Photoshop and have that translated to your prints, get this book. You'll also pick up all of those handy keyboard shortcuts that make the process fly." Amazon.com reviewer

"This is an amazing book... I came to buying this book from a recommendation and was only interested in looking at the colour management side to it, but I found myself learning SO much about the application itself. I now input my own photos and use the knowledge I learned from this book to print out wonderful photographs that I have manipulated myself. I RECOMMEND anyone (novice or experienced in Photoshop) to purchase this book, you WILL NOT regret it." Amazon.co.uk reviewer

This is one of the best layed out books I have come across. If you are thinking of buying one CS book, then this is the one. Martin Evening has written this book for photographers, and understand his topics quite well. The contents are well explained, the section on Colour Management is excellent. The book is well illustrated, with nice screen shots and example images.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adobe PhotoShop CS for Photographers, 25 Jun 2004

I have been referring to my copy of RealWorld version 5 for years and felt it was time to get a detailed book which includes the newer functions. Comparing the RealWorldCS and this, Martin's book won easily.

The layout is very methodical.
The illustrations are clear
Many of the sample photographs are included and you can easily apply the other sessions to these if the actual example is missing.
The videos give you a way into seeing how the application is used by someone else so you pick up tips that were not specifically related to the example.

Minor point, there are a few examples where they work but you are not sure if this is his preferred way of working or just being shown an alternative method.

An excellent thorough and readable book if you want to get the best from your images using this impressive software.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best book out there..., 22 April 2007

John Dynan (Highett, Vic Australia) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Adobe Photoshop CS for Photographers: Professional Image Editor's Guide to the Creative Use of Photoshop for the Mac and PC (Paperback)
I own several books on Photoshop CS and this is the best. Some of his techniques, such as the one for shrinking masks around hair, are absolutely amazing and he recommends using more difficult but ultimately more successful methods for selecting areas. The black and white section also goes to some length to explain what must be the best methods I've seen for creating the most effective contrast and atmosphere.

All of these techniques can be applied to other themes and are not intended top be used literally as presented in the book. The accompanying CD is very useful and in some cases, fills in a few blanks. The exercises are complex and need some practice to be effective. Other writers have already mentioned the quality of the layout and I can only agree.

There are, however, two points to make clear. Firstly, this is not a book for beginners, nor does it pretend to be. Many of the workflows in it are intended purely for working photographers but advanced amateurs can also benefit from them if they have a good grounding in Photoshop. Secondly, as a result of the first point, the author does not waste time on methods for putting your wife's head on a giraffe's body. If you want to do that there are other books available.

Highly recommended.
