With the new custom print layout creation tool you can drag one image or several different shots onto a page and resize or reposition them as you like.

Lightroom 3.0 offers a range of minor improvements to almost every aspect of the product. However, the two most important improvements are speed and Raw image management. It effortlessly upgrades even very large databases from Lightroom 2, and the speed hike is immediately noticeable. This is important, as the relatively sluggish performance on large databases (20,000 images +) was the most serious objection to the previous version. Additionally, Raw image handling has improved, now offering automatic lens distortion and chromatic aberration correction. Among other new features are support for video, tethering for select Nikon and Canon equipment, film grain effect, watermarks and a much improved sharpening and noise reduction algorithm.

I've used Lightroom as my main image database and raw converter since version 2.0, having skipped version 1.0 after some beta testing because of its poor speed by comparison with iView Multimedia and others. I principally moved to it because it offered a much cheaper upgrade path for raw capture on new cameras such as the Nikon D3 than upgrading Photoshop or Nikon Capture, while also offering a photographic database. The included toolset, although not as good as Nikon Capture, was responsive and, in many cases, meant I didn't have to take images into Photoshop. However, the downside was that, after about 10,000 images, the speed dropped dramatically, and the experience of navigating from image to image could at times be painfully slow.

With version 3.0, Adobe has obviously listened to the concerns of working photographers. Although it still isn't instantly responsive in the way that, say, iView Multimedia was, the overall workflow speed is substantially better. The inclusion of a lens database with automatic aberration and distortion controls means that the tools now rival Capture NX, and Lightroom begins to fulfil some of the functions of DxO, in addition to its own powerful digital assets management.

For upgraders, the inclusion of tethering for Nikon and Canon is worth the cost of the upgrade, as this would otherwise -- at least for Nikon -- be another piece of software to purchase. Other functions, such as better web publishing, support for video, and more print options, alongside some new effects such as film grain and postcrop vignette, may be enough to tempt the sceptical.

Overall an incremental upgrade which cements Lightroom as a very strong alternative to Aperture on a Mac, and a product really without competition on a Windows PC.

Recommended.

I've had Lightroom 2 for a few years now I have to say I found it a little limiting, though the work-flow side of it is of course fab and the reason you buy Lightroom.

Lightroom 3 is about using less plug-ins and Photoshop for things that really are work-flow items rather than true 'editing' tasks.

The hightlight features for me are the improved noise control, built-in watermarking, vignette tools and video slideshow output; the noise control alone is worth looking at older photos and re-processing them. The vignette and watermark mean less Photoshop which is good because the integration with Photoshop & Lightroom is OK but a little cumbersome. The video output is neat - not massively customisable but quick and good quality.

I've used the lens correction tools a few times but don't find them 'essential' though they do add to some shots with geometric patterns like buildings - the downside is that it seems a little limited in coverage right now - Canon, Nikon etc. - certainly not the Olympus PEN or Lumix G2 that we also have in the family.

Performance is also better - I certainly have had no crashes or bugs on my Mac and now it's native and 64bit it's certainly faster. I also like that it asks if you want to backup your catalogue at the end of session, not at the beginning. It always used to annoy me when I was waiting to start.

So in summary it's faster and enhances your workflow so you'll have to use fewer plugins and dip into other programs much less often, as well as getting better results. That sounds like a worthwhile upgrade to me.

Worthwhile Upgrade 22 Jun 2010
By Robert Groom TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
The noise reduction is LR3 alone is worth the price of the upgrade. Some sample images I've processed in parallel with Noise Ninja and LR3 show a comparable benefit at default settings. For the vast majority of images, I'll likely never use Noise Ninja now. You get fewer knobs and buttons than in specialist NR tools, but who really uses them all the time? Of course, you can also add film grain noise if you want to, which looks very convincing, and is a nice feature if you want to go for a reportage/retro look.

The new lens correction (distortion and vignetting) feature is fantastic, and I will be using this as a matter of course on the majority of my shots. Just check the list of supported lenses to be sure you're covered. There are 14 Nikon lenses (including popular Pro zooms like the holy trinity and the seemingly ubiquitous 18-200) and 27 Canon lenses listed along with a surprisingly long list from Sigma, but only 2 for Sony lenses and a miserly 1 for Tamron. No doubt this will be expanded as updates to LR3.1 and above are released. If your lens isn't specifically listed, then you can make manual adjustments, which should save an unnecessary trip into Photoshop.

The import dialogue is improved and clarified, and has extended options for applying standardised filenaming and metadata on import.

There is a tight integration with Flickr, and I have found a plugin allowing direct export to Photobox too, which is very useful (note that this is a 3rd party plugin and may not be free).

The image watermarking is improved, and lets you embed your professional logo in exports, which I will certainly be using.

The Tethered Capture feature is a great new addition, especially for Nikon shooters who don't get free remote capture software supplied. I plug my D700 into any USB port on my PC, fire up the Tethered Capture facility and the camera is immediately recognised. I can then fire away, and the shots will all be stored in a folder of my choice, with whatever naming convention I choose and with standard metadata applied as required. A preview of the last shot taken is displayed as I shoot. You can also add standard keywords at capture time, which is useful.

All of the above were the icing on the cake for me. The real reason why I upgraded to LR3 was the improved speed. When scanning through 30,000 photos, LR2.6 could be rather sluggish, especially displaying the thumbnail images in a non-pixellated format. LR3 is not instant, but it's certainly a lot faster, and that makes my job easier. It's a real time saver.

Overall, the upgrade from LR2.6 to LR3 is a very worthwhile jump for a reasonably modest amount of money, so if you already have LR2.x I can thoroughly recommend it.
