What is a Mediaroots Video Training DVD-Rom?
Mediaroots Video Training DVD-Roms are like having your own personal tutor. Just place the DVD-Rom into your PC or Mac and start watching! Watching the videos are like looking over the instructor's shoulder while they work, looking at their computer screen as they talk you through what they're doing.

Why use a Mediaroots product instead of going on a training course?
Courses at training centres cost upwards of £500 for just a two day course. Our training DVD-Roms give the flexibility to allow you to learn at your own pace, at a time good for you and the place you feel most comfortable.

Who are Mediaroots products targeted at?
Mediaroots products aren't targetted at any specific group, they are suitable for anyone looking to learn a piece of software, however they do provide a particular focus on teaching skills and techniques relevant to an academic course or job.

What skill level is required?
All of our Video Training DVD-Roms start with the very basics and work upwards to cover the more advanced techniques, so it doesn't matter if you've never even opened the program before, or already have a bit of experience.

Overview

There’s a reason why so many of your favourite magazines are produced using Adobe® InDesign® – the powerful page layout software does pretty much everything except write your articles and take your pictures. In this easy-to-follow training DVD, instructor Mark Schlesinger guides you through the basics of InDesign®, such as exploring the interface and the different tools, before progressing to more advanced techniques for controlling layout and design. Along the way, Mark also dishes out some very handy tips and tricks and delves into the latest CS4 enhancements, including "Smart Guides", easier cross-referencing, and exporting to SWF files for interactive digital publications.

Suitable for hobbyists and print professionals alike, the DVD’s logical, step-by-step approach lets you learn at your own pace. You can start at the beginning and learn the toolbars and menus, before moving on to navigation, setting up a page, placing text and editing graphics – all the way through to advanced features. Or you can jump straight to specific skills you want to improve.

Topics are divided into clear categories such as "Using Images", "Creating Graphics" and "Editing Type and Graphics", and your training concludes with a range of real-world exercises that result in you creating a complete magazine from start to finish. Learn from the comfort of your own home, at your own pace. Order today and get the full scoop on Adobe® InDesign®.

As someone who works with assisting students who use InDesign, keeping abreast of the latest developments is a necessary task, so this latest edition, covering CS4, was a welcome addition, and one of the best software training DVDs I have come across.

Using a British presenter, something which most of the Adobe training guides out there generally don't use (normally featuring an annoying sycophantic American Adobe employee/trainer!), and set out into neat clear chapters, with easy-to-follow steps, the basics (and the changes from CS2 to CS3 and CS4) are explained enabling you to pick up how to use what is rapidly becoming the industry standard desktop publishing software. Highly recommended.

This Core Training DVD is one of a series covering the Adobe creative suite elements.

The chapters included in the training DVD are: Introduction; User Interface; Navigation; Set Up Your Page; Setting Up Your Document; Placing Text, Tables, Interactive & Flash, Using Images, Creating Graphics, Edit Type & Graphics; PDF and Printing and a Case Study of a Magazine layout.

I'm not sure who this training is actually aimed at. Some of the instructions and explanations seemed very basic while others seemed to skim over important items as if it was assumed that it was known. Since I came in knowing absolutely nothing about how to work InDesign, there were times that I felt a little confused but as soon as I started playing around on InDesign it all started to make sense. If you have used InDesign and know how to use some of the features, I still think you'll get something out of this DVD but not as much as if you are a complete beginner.

The trainer (Mark Schlesinger) has a pleasant and calming voice that's easy to understand, especially since he doesn't speak too quickly. I've noticed that others thought he was bland but I thought he was the perfect host to the DVD.

The price may seem a little high for a training DVD but since the whole thing is over 6 hours long, you really are getting value money. I also used this as part of work and the cost of the DVD is definitely less than if you went on a training course.

As the spec states, this product works on both PCs and Macs which is great if you use a different computer at home and work.

It does take a while to work your way through the whole DVD but I really have found it worth it.

I have just played around with this a little bit but found it to be a well thought out and put together learning aid.

However I really got it as a present for my step dad as he loves this stuff, I have spoken to my mum and she says he has been on it constantly and is boring her to tears with it, so that sounds like a thumbs up from him as well.

I was considering booking a 2 day course at a training centre, that were looking to charge me £800 for the two days! Then I noticed this training DVD. I'm so impressed! I've basically learned everything I would have on the course for a fraction of the cost.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I came to this product with limited Creative Suite knowledge. The only CS5 programme I use regularly is After Effects, and I've never had formal training. When I've needed to learn new tricks in the past I've watched video tutorials on websites like Creative Cow.

The format and pacing of this product surprised me at first. It goes through pretty much every button/ interface/ menu drop down from (to my mind) the blindingly obvious to the less self-explanatory. The voice guide, compared to other online tutorials which often sound two or three pots of coffee to the good, was plodding and methodical. I found myself fast forwarding through most of the individual videos.

The second thing that surprised me was the aesthetic quality of the example documents. Most of them look pretty 90s and I found that off-putting rather than inspirational, even if the videos were bulletproof in explaining the mechanical aspects of each design.

Overall - this product is a helpful reference to have for a novice in that it's essentially a video manual. From that point of view, it can't really be knocked - because you'd have to spend substantial chunks of time trawling the internet to find answers to the all questions it neatly organises for you.

But if you want to feel in the hands of a master - and get those 'that's how they do that!' moments - I would give it only a tepid recommendation.

Nothing compares to these video training products when it comes to learning how to use software that you may be unfamiliar with. You can work along with the video to get used to using the Adobe InDesign for yourself - although I'm not sure it would be quite so useful to those who already frequently use graphic design based software.

Also, to agree with a previous reviewer, it is great that companies are starting to recognize Mac more these days! I had no problems using this on my iMac (OSX 10.5.6).

I've been using Indesign since CS2. (I've been designing professionally for 8 years.)

During my college years I used the Visual Quickstart books for Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator and QuarkXpress. I still stand by using books, they're easy to refer to, and reading by book is far easier on the eye than reading on screen.

But, with this Rom, there's the great advantage over using books... video guidance.
I'm not exactly saying that "monkey-see, monkey-do" is a particularly great way of learning, but it does beat having to refer to static images in books. The videos on here are very good, and although I have not used others in the training series, I would expect all of them to be of similar quality.

From a personal preference, the downside with the Rom, is that referring back to it is a little bit of a pain... you have to put it in the computer and load it up, access the glossary; whereas a book is easier to access. But this really is a minor groan.

As a student, I don't think I could recommend this enough. As a professional designer, this would be a wise investment. (Also, if you own an agency, or need to train staff, this will save you a pretty penny than sending them off on a training course.)

For the small amount of cash you'll pay for it, you'll learn a valuable lifetime's worth of skills, which is priceless. Highly recommended. 5/5
