I have been using Illustrator for a couple of years to design brochures for my business. However, I have no formal experience and I tend to use pre-made templates because I don't know how to create my own.
This training DVD has taken me from amateur messer-arounder to a semi-professional. I now have the confidence and the knowledge to create my own templates. The real icing on the cake is that I now know what all the buttons in Illustrator do!
I love the training style of the presenters and the way the training exercises reinforce the teaching.

illustrator is a complex product that does lots of things and not always intuitively (at least until you see how it works). I have been using Illustrator for several years self-taught and often spent a lot of time working things out. This has fast forwarded me considerably. If i was starting from scratch it would help even more. You have to compare it to the hours of self-discovery, the cost of a course or making sense of a book. If you have someone who could spend a day with you teaching you illustrator that would be best - this has the downside that it goes at its own pace (sometimes you wish it was faster and sometimes slower, but you can replay as many times as you like and it is sorted well into a series of lessons you can use to refresh). If you want to get not professional but reasonably competent and are willing to put in maybe 8-10 hours this will help a lot

As with all these packages, they are so big you don't know where to start. Thankfully this has lots of small introductions to get you on your way and then more advanced topics later. The only downside is the price. Is it worth more than a few books and perseverance? Maybe.
