What is a Mediaroots Video Training DVD-Rom?
Mediaroots Video Training DVD-Roms are like having your own personal tutor. Just place the DVD-Rom into your PC or Mac and start watching! Watching the videos are like looking over the instructor's shoulder while they work, looking at their computer screen as they talk you through what they're doing.

Why use a Mediaroots product instead of going on a training course?
Courses at training centres cost upwards of £500 for just a two day course. Our training DVD-Roms give the flexibility to allow you to learn at your own pace, at a time good for you and the place you feel most comfortable.

Who are Mediaroots products targeted at?
Mediaroots products aren't targetted at any specific group, they are suitable for anyone looking to learn a piece of software, however they do provide a particular focus on teaching skills and techniques relevant to an academic course or job.

What skill level is required?
All of our Video Training DVD-Roms start with the very basics and work upwards to cover the more advanced techniques, so it doesn't matter if you've never even opened the program before, or already have a bit of experience.

Overview

If you want to produce web animation, you need to know Adobe® Flash®. Flash® lets you add interactivity to websites, mobile phone applications and other platforms. In this accessible training DVD, Flash experts Mark Rogers and Allie Crawford cover the essential tools of Flash’s huge toolset, including filters, music and masks. You’ll work through the step-by-step construction of a professional-looking web banner, making the learning process as interactive as the program itself.

If you’re new to Flash®, you can start with the basics, learn how to set up a productive workspace and move on to the more creative aspects of the program. Mark’s comprehensive tour of all the drawing tools, images and symbols helps prepare you for the more advanced sections. If you already have some knowledge of Flash®, you can skip to the topics that interest you, including several tutorials on animation, and find your own level. Allie covers all of the latest CS4 enhancements, including object-based animation and 3D transformation tools and the new "Motion Editor".

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
For an introductory guide this tutorial covers the majority of ground you'd expect. While not going into huge depth at the more advanced areas (Action script) it does cover enough to get you started on the basics. You'll come away from this with enough knowledge to make some basic animations, web banners and graphics.

The software utilizes its own video interface displaying a full page view of Flash's interface. Chapters are accessed using a drop down menu at the top. I did find there was some freezing while navigating between chapters but it soon resolved itself. Each chapter is split into sub categories that delve deeper into the subject. Again it doesn't go into huge depth but enough to get you familiar with using the features of Flash.

At the end of the tutorial (there's around 14 chapters) you can complete some examples for CS3/4 using the template files on the disk. It's a good way to get some hands on experience without having to develop all the graphics yourself.

A few negatives I noted were the progression of the tutorial and the placement of the CS3 and CS4 categories. I found that the instructors would mention a subject that was, "covered previously", unfortunately it hadn't yet, which I found a little confusing as I thought I'd missed something. Also the CS4 categories should have been placed at the end as they cover areas not yet mentioned in the main CS3 tutorial (such as tweening).

Overall though I think mediaroots Flash training is a good way for the uninitiated to get to grips with Flash. The £40 price tag is a little steep for a beginners guide but I can't fault the clearly spoken Instructors who take things nice and slow and cover a lot with clear demonstrations.

This is an excellent product for anyone new to Flash - and even those with experience of previous Flash versions trying to find out more about the new features in Flash CS4 such as bones for character animation (like me). Each chapter of the course is concise but very clear, and what I really liked was the range of (British!) accents used for the narration - it makes a really nice change from the usual USA bias of most multimedia training courses.

All of the chief tools for design and animation are covered, along with the basic of ActionScript - a really good foundation course to get you up and running with Flash very quickly.

Flash is very very complicated, but a great program. Wanting to learn it, I had to start somewhere and it was books, or this training DVD. I'm glad I chose the right decision, some of the stuff taught in this DVD I couldn't imagine learning from a book. Great for beginners and experts alike.
