I don't know whether I'm particularly thick, but I can't seem to get anywhere with this book.

I usually buy the QuickStart guides as I find them nicely paced and with just enough detail at any given point, but decided to buy this on the strength of the reviews.

The major irritation for me is the lack of explanation as to why things are the way they are; a short paragraph leaving the reader none the wiser is usually all there is.

Poor.

I was very sceptical about purchasing this book - I saw Flash as a complicated skill to learn that would take years of perfecting. I was proved wrong in an astonishing way.

This book is absolutely fantastic - in 10 easy steps you learn how to create the most detailed graphics and animations, something I never thought I'd do. But after the first few "Lessons" I was feeling more confident. My favourite lesson has to be Lesson 4 where you create something which wouldn't be out of place on an official movie website. All the graphics are provided on the disc, so it's simple and easy to get started. My only problem I had is that it skips a few steps in later lessons - it presumes that you'll know how to create the other elements that are already there for you, but reinforcement is needed to help you remember.

Considering you can pay hundreds of pounds for lessons on how to learn Flash, I'd say don't bother. This book is fun, informative, and cheap. You never feel out of your depth and it just talks you through the steps in a way that anyone could understand - I haven't been sat at my chair thinking, "What is it talking about?"

Would definitely recommend this book - perfect for beginners right up to those who want to refine their skills.

I'm a Graphic Designer who needed to build my website, and wasn't prepared to pay another designer to do the job!. So I decided to make the plunge into learning Web Design with Flash and bought this book to learn the basics. I'm so happy I bought this book. It provides great lessons on getting to grips with Flash in a simple & intuitive manner. I can't say enough good things about this book.

However, the Actionscript (the Flash coding language) lessons in this book are VERY basic, so I would advise anybody buying this book to also purchase a book which solely teaches you Actionscript 3.0

This book covers a wide range of topics including the new Motion Editor and Inverse Kinematics which, when you do the lessons, you'll be amazed at how easy it is to tweak animations and create articulated motion. It is well paced and enjoyable and although not complex, you will certainly say "cool!" at least once unless you are a wizard on Flash in which case you shouldn't be reading this!

For someone who has hardly any experience of Flash at all, this book was a godsend. Beginning with simple exercises and introducing techniques carefully and with plenty of explanations, this book had me making some good looking animations in no time. Each tutorial is broken down into easily managable sections that allow you to make real progress without getting bogged down in jargon. Some training books I have used in the past require you to take on so much that you forget what you are doing or why you are doing it - not so with this one; it's clearly been written by a skillful team of educators who had absolute beginners in mind. Highly recommended.

I was a bit trepidatious when ordering this Classroom in a Book - I am not usually that good with stuff like this but I have to tell you I followed each lesson and it was easy - ish. Anyway, working my way through each chapter never having set foot inside the Flash program before I got to grips with it first time around. In fact I am in the middle of making Flash movies for somebody's website and I have already made some picture viewers for my own website.

Get the book and get making Flash movies - I did. Adobe Flash CS4 Professional: The Official Training Workbook from Adobe Systems (Classroom in a Book)

I bought this book after purchasing CS4(Production suite).
And though i'd been away from the flash scene for 18mths - it got me back up to speed with all the revisions, tools, and various layouts that this new version of flash has to offer.
I within a short time I had completed a project which I then applied that knowledge to 'flip book' and other interactive media and made also realise that this software coupled with a decent grasp of actionscript 2/3 and other certain other program languages out there - could possibly see careers spawned and others rise from the ashes!
Good luck and happy flashing.

Really good book until it gets to the Action Script element. As a superficial user of very old versions of Flash, this was a great catch up with lots of ideas to use straight away. I really need to use Flash to make animations but there will be times when I want to do more, so want to use script too. As has been said before the Action Script element is basic, but at the same time piles in a lot of additional facts in inserts, not really giving you enough contextual explanation. However, triumph of hope over experience, I've ordered the AS3 Classroom in a Book - I liked the format and its got great potential.
