A good, but not perfect, reference guide to Dreamweaver CS6 12 July 2012
By Gail Issen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
If you're looking for a tutorial on Adobe Dreamweaver CS5, this is not your book. However, if you already have experience with Dreamweaver, you'll find this book to be an attractive reference. The book is organized in 24 color-coded chapters. Throughout the book, features that are new to either CS5.5 or CS6 are clearly identified. Therefore, if you are an experienced Dreamweaver user, you can quickly focus on the features that you may want to learn.

The book has been designed in color which makes it very attractive. Each task in this book is presented in at most two pages so that you can see everything at a glance. While this is a nice feature, it does have its limitations. In order to fit on the 2-page layout, the screenshots are so tiny that they are best viewed with a magnifying glass. Also, the instructions are, of necessity, kept to a bare minimum.

I was disappointed to find that this book shows insufficient attention to detail. I had the impression that much of the book may have been copied from an earlier version without first checking whether the feature is exactly the same in CS6. For example,

* In the Workshops many of the instructions were unclear or simply did not apply to the CS6 version of the software.
* In Chapter 2, "Creating a Web Page from a Blank Template" there was a reference to selecting a 2 column, elastic, left sidebar layout. Elastic layouts do not exist in CS6.

As shown in the following listing, workshops advertised in the book do not match those provided in the pdf document downloaded from the website.

Workshops Listed in Book
Project 1 Creating a Website from Scratch
Project 2 Creating Layouts
Project 3 Creating Cascading Style Sheets
Project 4 Inserting Images and Media
Project 5 Creating Hyperlinks and Navigation Bars
Project 6 Creating Forms
Project 7 Creating a Mobile App

Actual Workshops in the pdf file
Project 1 Creating a Website from Scratch
Project 2 Adding Web Page Tables
Project 3 Using Cascading Sheets
Project 4 Inserting Images
Project 5 Creating Hyperlinks
Project 6 Creating and Applying a Template
Project 7 There is no Project 7!

In summary, this is a very attractive reference guide to Dreamweaver CS6. However, it should not be your only book on the subject.

Dreamweaver CS6 When You Need It 25 July 2012
By Dr. Bojan Tunguz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Dreamweaver is probably the most popular and versatile website creation software package. If you are serious about the web development and are designing a fairly complex website, then Dreamweaver will be an essential tool that will save you many hours of work and post-creation maintenance. Dreamweaver CS6 is the most sophisticated version of Dreamweaver yet, and it adds several very useful features and enhancements to an already great development environment. If you want to make the most out of Dreamweaver, as well as if you want to simplify your workflow, then it would behoove you to invest a bit of your time to familiarize yourself with as many subtleties and features of Dreamweaver as you can. However, if you are too busy (and who isn't these days), then you may not want to invest too much time in going through a long-winded book that takes you systematically through all of the aspects of Dreamweaver. If you just need to know very specific things that you need to know immediately, then "Dreamweaver CS6 on Demand" is an ideal book for you.

The book is essentially built out of many individual tasks, which are grouped in thematic units. These thematic units are essentially book chapters, although they are much more loosely organized. You don't have to go through chapters, or event the book, sequentially - you can focus on all the tasks that interest you at the moment, and each task is completely self-contained.

There is no prior knowledge necessary for reading this book, and even if you are an absolute beginner you will not feel intimidated with its content. However, there are many tasks and chapters that deal with the latest Dreamweaver features, and even people who use Dreamweaver professionally in their daily work stand to benefit from learning more about these by reading

Each task is presented on two facing pages. This greatly improves readability and accessibility of the content, and makes it easier to work on those tasks while simultaneously reading the book.

Many tasks involve manipulating or modifying various files. All the files that are required for the completion of the given examples can be downloaded from the publisher's website. This is a fairly straightforward procedure, and the files are relatively small and don't take long to download.

A lot of the information that can be found in this book is available online on various helpful websites. However, in my experience it is always easier to just leaf through a book when you need to find out something "on demand". This particular book is very useful in that regard, especially if you are new to Dreamweaver. If you've already had experience with previous versions of Dreamweaver you could still benefit from knowing what's new in CS6, but getting this book might be overkill for you.

Overall this is a very well written and informative book. Highly recommend it.

A Great Reference and Resource 21 July 2012
By Jane R. Burt - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is a great reference and learning guide for Adobe Dreamweaver, whether you're a seasoned user or just building your first site. The layout of the book is very helpful for visual learners, with full color examples, step-by-step instructions, and explanation and references to similar topics. The tabbed, color-coded pages also make this a great reference book for moving through site-building tasks. I started out with Macromedia Dreamweaver and now have Adobe Dreamweaver 6. This software is, by far, the premiere software for website building and development and has grown and expanded to meet the rising demands of designers and developers over the years. This book includes the improvements featured in CS6, as well as the features that made Dreamweaver the first choice of professionals for many years. I would highly recommend it as a valuable learning aid and handy reference. One note: I've recently progressed to building sites using the recently introduced HTML5 and I'm using CSS for styling the pages (responsive web designs). This accommodates access to the site with any devise and allows the page to fit the screen versus a static, table-based page that may shift or re-configure the layout to accomodate the users screen. I wish the book had put more focus on these techniques in the later chapters including HTML5 and CSS versus table structures, which are becoming somewhat outdated.

Web Developers Beware - Save Your Money!!! 28 Jan. 2014
By R. Louise - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
If you are a web developer and have been working with a different software package or an old version of Dreamweaver and need to get up to speed, do not, I say, do not buy this book. It tells you nothing but promises the world.

I still don't know how to design a page using AP elements or Fluid graphics. Then they throw in a section on Spry and Snippets but don't tell you what they are, only that you can insert them. To add insult to injury, they claim that they have online workshops you can access to gain real world experience into many of the topics covered. It is laughable! It is remedial at best. Need to know how to create a hyperlink? It will tell you.... Don't be fooled by what they claim. Save your money and buy something else!

Solid reference and guide 25 July 2012
By Cyndi Gosney - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I love the On Demand series ... you can use this book to guide you through Dreamweaver, and, once you have a working familiarity with it, you will find this book to be a handy reference. I am studying for the Adobe ACE Dreamweaver Exam and have used other materials which are also helpful, but this book explains features and functions without using an example scenario, which I really like. I don't have to try to translate the scenario in the book to the real situation on my computer. Each subject starts with a short section that explains the "why" of the feature or function; then the book will guide you with step-by-step instructions. Very helpful!
