Product Description

Charles II returns from exile bringing with him unease to the Spanish Main. In this vivid description of seventeenth-century buccaneers, Ned Yorke, the leader and hero of the swashbuckling band are depended upon for the defence of Jamaica, fighting with captured Spanish guns. Daring raids on the Spanish seem inevitable, as Yorke sets out on the high seas to distant adventures on behalf of the King and his own honour.

About the Author

Dudley Bernard Egerton Pope was born in 1925 into an ancient Cornish seafaring family. He joined the Merchant Navy at the age of sixteen and spent much of his early life at sea. He was torpedoed during the Second World War and his resulting spinal injuries plagues him for the rest of his life. Towards the end of the war he turned to jouralism becoming the Naval and Defence Correspondent for the London Evening News. Encouraged by Hornblower creator CS Forester, he began writing fiction using his own experiences in the Navy and his extensive historical reseacrh as a basis. In 1965 he wrote 'Ramage', the first of his highly successful series of novels following the exploits of the heroic Lord Nicholas Ramage during the Napoleonic Wars. He continued to live aboard boats whenever possible and this was where he wrote the majority of his novels. Dudley Pope died in 1997 aged seventy one. A pleasant naval adventure, lacking in excitement. 30 Oct 2000
By David Brukman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Dudley Pope has written several naval adventures. _Admiral_ is one in a series about Ned Yorke, an English Royalist in the West Indies during the Cromwell's Protectorate.

With Cromwell's death, Ned turns from a rebel to a privateer. Attacking the Spanish with his beautiful lover and buccaneer allies, Ned shows his skills as a commander against a background of tropical nature, sailing, treacherous politics and dangerous but declining Spanish Empire.

The characters are fairly likable, but there are no interesting villains, and few true challenges, which make the successes in the story less than exciting. The overall lack of suspense, and lack of a motivating cause on the part of the heroes (other than love of excitement and need for money) prevents this book from rising above a mild entertainment.

What a great pity that Dudley is no longer with us. One of the greats in literature. His stories are wll worked out and based on history which makes them great.
