Amazon.co.uk Review

Aimed at network administrators who may not be familiar with Web servers, Administering IIS4 offers a hands-on practical approach to Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0 (IIS 4). This guide is designed to help busy technology professionals get IIS 4 installed quickly and respond to the many administration challenges.

Author Mitch Tulloch shows his expertise as a Microsoft Certified Trainer, presenting the information in a well-organised format that resolves around solving common problems. He uses three parts: Administering Servers, Administering Clients and Administering Content Developers to cover the essential information. A mixture of suggestion lists, problem/solution examples and walkthroughs make the title an efficient read.

Tulloch covers the individual WWW, FTP, SMTP and NNTP services from the management perspective and he devotes a large portion of the book to troubleshooting in a question and answer format. While this section includes lots of useful information, some of the answers are a bit light.

Two appendices offer concise tutorials on TCP/IP and DNS, including an excellent explanation of IP addresses and a walkthrough of how to configure Microsoft DNS Server. For administrators who need immediate assistance running IIS 4, this how-to will frequently come to the rescue. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Installation, Microsoft Management Console, WWW/FTP/SMTP/NNTP services, Internet Explorer Administration Kit, Indexing, Performance monitoring and optimisation, digital certificates, Active Server Pages and troubleshooting.

This is a good book for introducing IIS4 to a reasonable level of proficiency. It covers most things I have needed, and I go back to it regularly as a reference.

I have also given it to junior network administators as a instructional text, and am pleased with what they have learnt.

Easy to follow walk throughs and understandable screen shorts. Use this one together other IIS books on market. You need a quick reference? buy this one. You need an understanding of ODBC errors? Go else where. Recommended for Novices.

The author clearly spent a lot of time thinking, before writting this book, as the layout of demontrates it.

with such a tricky subject, walkthroughs with plenty of illustratrions are essential. Having said that i have to cheer him for delivering so well...

i know that DNS is huge subject and book is needed to explain it, but IIS throughly interacts with it for host header mapping. And unfortunally, I could not find enough in depth information in the supplied dns appendix.
