As the title suggests, this books tries to do away with our conventional notions of what is 'good' writing style, and exposes the reader to new possibilities in expression in writing. It demonstrates in numerous examples how you can use creativity, ingenuity and imagination in using language without having to sacrifice the content of your piece, and how in many instances, your writing style can not only add to the power of your writing, it can become an integral part of the message. I liked this book for its practical approach (examples and exercises are including in each section) and originality, and the fact that the writers' enthusiasm and engagement with the subject is apparent throughout. The end section on critical thinking, though short, also contains some valuable techniques and insights. One word of advice though; if you are looking for a book which will help you to organise your ideas and structure your material in a straightforward manner, I would look elsewhere. This book is primarily concerned with style and language, and opens your eyes to the creative possibilities of the academic essay.
