ADDICTED TO LOVE

This book had me so hooked. I loved the plot ... unique and creative [with] just the right about of romance, sexuality, thrills, mystery, and just plain crazy ...

--Tiffany Harkleroad, Tiffany's Bookshelf

CJ's latest offering is a blend of the thrillers we come to expect from him and a new touch of romance, actually a little steamier than just any old romance, so I like to call it a "steamy thriller."

--Roxanne

THE END OF MARKING TIME

... West has brilliantly portrayed a world gone crazy where the rule is there are no rules, or are they. Crime fiction meets science fiction in this awesome thriller."

--Book Bitch

Powerful, thought provoking and massively entertaining... I loved this book and the way it made me root for someone who I knew I shouldn't like.

--CrimeSquad.com

SIN AND VENGEANCE

...the book was spellbinding. The plotting is brilliant, and Randy is an exquisite character, an evil genius for the modern age.

--Debra Hamel

C.J. West delivers, from the highly erotic opening scene to the chilling conclusion. Sin & Vengeance is a provocative page-turner brimming with intrigue and heart-pounding suspense.

--Alynn

Wes Holiday sells his landscaping business and retreats to a quaint mountain town to heal after ending a ten year relationship with a woman he couldn't bring himself to marry. In three weeks he is so captivated by a hair stylist that he deprives himself of food and sleep to be near her. When the local sheriff is murdered, Wes is recruited to keep the peace in the town his parents built, but he knows nothing about law enforcement and he's struggling to understand how a woman he just met can dominate his every waking thought. Soon the idyllic town with a penchant for romance is rocked by a bizarre series of murders that defy explanation and it is up to Wes to stop a raging epidemic of violence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story that keeps you guessing ... 11 Feb 2012

Download this now whilst it is free. I read it a while back, and found it resembled some of S King's writing. There is somehting strange going on in this sleepy town ..... and the author keeps you guessing all along. I also enjoyed an earlier book by same auhor 'The End of Marking Time', which you will not easily forget, one that makes you think about things. Have enjoyed this writer's books very much so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars How addictive is love? 25 Mar 2013
By Aurora
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Imagine a town where the couples are so besotted with one another that no-one can remember anyone getting divorced, the ugly guy is married to a stunning beauty, the queues at the flower shop are always 20 people long and the chocolate shop is just as busy. The new guy in town is deeply in love within three dates, and wants to marry the girl within a month. This town really is Addicted to Love - more than they could ever imagine. Then suddenly the devoted wife of the town sheriff murders him and afterwards appears to go completely insane, Despite being well sedated she manages to kill herself by beating her head against the furnishings in her cell at the police station. Before long another loving couple are dead in similar circumstances, and things are looking very bleak for other couples. Why is it that one man stands out from all the other people in town, he isn't in love, no-one seems to find him attractive and the co-opted and very inexperienced sheriff cannot understand what is going on. (What sort of town would coax someone into reluctantly taking on the sheriff's role just because his father built the town?)
Slowly the new sheriff, with the help of the town doctor begins to tease apart the mess and begin to try to work out the incredible truth.
This is a quirky story with a difference and I liked that it is not a run of the mill tale of murder and investigation. I like CJ West's work for its differences, and he not only "thinks outside the box" but draws his own boxes to think outside of. I am currently re-reading this book and still finding new things in it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as The End of Marking Time 19 Jun 2012
By TopCat TOP 1000 REVIEWER

Wes has holed up in a cabin in the holiday town he used to summer in with his family. He's sold up his business and fallen madly in love with a local hairdresser. He's completely besotted but his pleasure is interrupted by the death of the local sheriff. He is appointed to the role temporarily despite having no experience of any sort in law enforcement. What seems to be a one-off crime of passion turns out to be the start of a series of inexplicable attacks and Wes has to try and tear himself away from his new darling to try and prevent any more deaths in a town more used to love than hate.

I started this book with high hopes, having really enjoyed The End of Marking Time when I read that book by West. And to begin with I was enjoying this book. However as things progressed, although the reason his behaviour became clear later, I just found Wes a bit too ridiculous. Also the whole premise of the town council appointing a man with no credentials but a respected family as sheriff for a murder investigation was unbelievable. The reason for the murders and attacks could have been chilling and thought provoking if it wasn't all quite so daft.

I was also put off by the fact there seemed to be something missing when a major revelation was made about what was going on in the town. When an aspect of it was mentioned later in the book I thought maybe I had inadvertently skimmed the important sentence or paragraph but going back and re-reading the relevant part I still couldn't see it.

On the positive side there was one character I could warm to, and the author's style makes for an easy flowing read. There are some very interesting and potentially quite worrying ideas in this book but the way the story plays out almost cheapened those ideas. The end made my skin crawl a little.

I know others have slated this book but I thought the story-line was okay if a bit predictable. It wont win any awards thats for sure but its okay for quick read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable - not in a good way! 14 April 2012

I have just had to go into my account to check I didn't pay for this book as it is so awful- thankfully it was free! It is totally unbelievable, I am not quite sure which genre it is meant to be but doesn't really even start being any. I didn't build any connection or empathy with the characters and eventually gave up!! Avoid.

You need to persevere with this book - I had real problems with the beginning but found myself getting into it about a quarter of the way through.

Wes, whose father seems to have built the town and be the local "squire" (or American version) gets involved in a murder mystery where the sheriff is murdered. Instead of appointing the only other law enforcement officer in town to the now vacant position and to investigate the town council meet at the murder site (there only seem to be about four of them) and appoint Wes as sheriff. I have no idea whether or not this is feasible given that American laws are different from those I know and understand but it does seem unlikely, as well as a bit stupid.

Wes hasn't got a clue about how to investigate this murder and seems much more inclined to spend time with his girlfriend than find out what has happened. It was at this point that I was tempted to abandon the book but it transpires that the attraction he has for his partner is part of the plot. This bit was not done well in that I had formed the view that Wes was not a very nice person and a bit of a slacker before I then understood why and I never really regained sympathy with him as a character.

As we become aware that there is a problem with the town we see that there is corruption in the town council and something is making women turn on their lifelong partners and kill them. I think that this part of the book was meant to be horror but the author didn't really establish the atmosphere which was needed for this. Instead, it was a suspense/mystery novel with slightly horrific interludes. I found the ending a bit morally suspect too.

In conclusion, this book was patchy and a bit far fetched.
