This is one of the most gripping books I have ever read. The fact that it is based on a true story makes it even more amazing. The author does not try to exuse or explain his behaviour - although any reader with intelligence could draw their own conclusions about why he turned out the way he did. This book will make you rethink your views on the "real" homeless that exist in this country. If people want a predictable read with a hollywood ending - dont buy this book.

Not having personal experience of drugs it only occurred to me that there might be fabrication within this book when I read these reviews. So if you are an ex/addict looking to empathise or a person looking for facts maybe this will not hit the spot. But I was looking for a story and wow can Stephen tell one! I loved this book, it really affected me and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing of Stephens life. This book wasn't just good, it was great and I have recommended it to so many people over the years that it deserves 5 stars.

This book is fantastic, who cares if he may have exagerated some of the parts of the book. the fact is that he has lived an amazing life and is trying to warn people away from the dangers of drugs.
rumour has it that it will be turned into a hollywood film, and if any story deserves it its this one.

I loved this book, honest, real and sad. Im a recovering addict myself and although I didn't go through what the author did, I can identify with the feelings the obsession and the madness. I have read this book about 6 times on holiday, and I am often asked about it from holiday makers. the cover alone says it all, the pain in the eyes on the front cover showing me how horrific it must of been.

Its good to read a book that is so well written, I felt like I was there when he was describing every moment, and the pain was excruciating but the humor leveled it out for me. I can honestly say this is the best read ever, I have passed it to friends and family who also couldn't put it down, and none of them are addicts, This book is for anyone who wants to know what real life can really be like for some, and the strength that this person has by still being alive to tell this story. I felt like he was talking to me directly it felt so real. Great read! Hope there is a book to follow......

Read this a few years ago and it was one of those books that takes you in completely. Full of the stories that reflect the unbelievable lengths addicts will go to to get their fix. Funny yet sad, clever yet worryingly horrific. Great book, easy to read and that gets you hooked on it... It should be higher in the rankings

I read this book originaly when I was 16. At the time I considered the amazing story one of the best books I'd ever read. With this in mind, and no memory of it, I decided to read it again at 29. Since then I've been a very heavy drug user, taking chemicals 99.9% of the population have never even heard of, including Dexedrine; living the modern student dream!! For the last few years I'm happy to say I've simply grown out of it and at my happiest with a pint of cider with my friends.
My point is this, I have a good memory but during those mad drug binges I recall practically nothing. The only thing I'm sure of is that I had a bloody fun time. So how on earth can a book be written with this much detail is beyond me. Especially considering he had electric shock treatment!

Very entertaing yes, but I'd take the whole thing with a pinch of salt.
