I first read this book as a teenager, 20 years ago. One night, I thought, "I'll just do 1 chapter tonight," at about 10 PM. A little after 5 AM, I finished it. I literally could not make myself set it down. I *had* to read the whole book.
If you only read one work of fiction this year, you will not be disappointed in choosing this book.
As others have noted, it is fiction, based on Christian scriptures, in which we follow a few persons through their experiences in life from before coming to our mortal existence on Earth (often known as the "pre-mortal existence"), their lives on Earth through their resurrected lives after the second coming of Jesus Christ. Remember, this is a work of fiction, meant to inspire, entertain and uplift. But, it also teaches the reader a view of God's Plan of Happiness for all of His Children )all of us).
Yes, I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (a.k.a. Mormon) [[...]]. The story involves an speaks of doctrines as revealed in these latter days and found in Scriptures. Even if you are not knowledgeable about Mormons, "Mormonism", Christianity nor our beliefs, don't worry; you do not need any of that to thoroughly enjoy this story.
