Some devices that charge via USB make a determination as to whether they are plugged in to a high powered wall charger or a relatively low powered computer USB port. They do this by looking at the data (vs power) lines in the USB cable. I believe Apple devices are looking for specific voltages on the data lines, and Samsung Tablets look for the data lines to be shorted. If they see in these ways that the data lines are not being used for data, they will believe they are plugged in to a wall charger.

The Samsung wall charger that came with the tablet is recognized by the tablet as a wall charger. However, an aftermarket wall charger, even a high powered (2000 mA) one, will likely not be recognized. If your (non-Samsung) charger can supply high power, then this USB/USB in-line gizmo will "inform" the tablet about that. Without it, the tablet will not take full advantage of the charger and charge times will be longer.

The battery program that I have put on my Galaxy Tab 7.7 lights up either an icon of a wall plug or of a computer port, while charging. Putting this adapter into the USB line and taking it out, switches that icon immediately.

For those unfamiliar, the problem with most 3rd-party USB chargers is that the two data pins are operational in them - most USB-charged devices, however, recognize a *charger* rather than a PC via the fact that these two pins are closed, and thus draw a much higher current, and in turn actually charge quickly.

The alternative, unfortunately, is a very slow charge at about 0.5A (around the default for USB), or cutting open a microUSB cable to cut off the two wires that lead to the data pins.

And *this* is a third option, for pretty much any device - with the data pins closed, one can charge most any smart device quickly and efficiently. And it works.
