Warning for RAID/XP people:
You need to jump through some hoops to make this RAID controller work on XP (i.e. need a floppy drive and to make yourself a driver disk or slipstream drivers into an XP CD) but this is a general problem for RAID and XP and is true for all RAID controllers that were not around when XP was created.

Having said that:
Installation easy (ok, I was breaking a RAID array so "easy" is relative) and boot-up installation easy. In comparison with my previous experiences with cheaper RAID alternatives, I highly recommend you spend a bit more and get an adaptec card. Once you take into account the reinstalling, cursing and general irritation of the others, it makes good business sense. Running with 2 (r)aid 0 striped WD SATA2 drives and it is fast AND reliable.

This is an excellent piece of kit but installing it is not a job for the inexperienced. Physical installation is easy but configuring the software is not. Mostly this is because the instructions need to be updated: I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit and the instructions stop at Windows Vista. Also they ask at one point for a floppy disk to be inserted! Dinosaurs may remember what they were! I was trying to configure a Raid 1 array and eventually I succeeded. I now have the comfort of knowing that if one hard disk dies then the second one is there ready to take over, with no loss of data. Every couple of weeks I also copy a Disk image onto an external USB hard drive. This hardware is good, with the proviso that you need to have the knowledge to get it running, in spite of the poor instructions provided, before considering buying it.

This card is perfect for the home user who wants a minimum fuss way of saving thier data; and RAID cards don't come any better than Adaptec.
Few people back up thier home PC's data and I often hear laments about lost photographs and life works when thier PC crashes. This is usually followed by stories of the PC spending weeks at a repair centre and a large often unnecessary bill.
Buy one of these RAID cards and a spare hard drive (at least equal in size to your present one,) and spend time reading the instructions before installing. Effectively this card allows you to 'mirror' your existing PC's hard drive onto another hard drive. The two run seamlessly 24/7, then, if one crashes the other simply takes over near instantly and all your data is protected almost right up to the last keystroke. Yes, you will be continuously reminded to replace the failed hard drive at some point, but this method of data protection comes with much less aggravation and is far cheaper in the long run than any other method my 30 years experience of IT knows.
