DG has been churning out various `Adagio Karajan' titles for years. They probably sell in numbers well above any of the individual full works that these extracts are taken from, being slow movements from symphonies (the whole gamut from Mozart to Mahler) and what you might call typical Classic FM fodder - nothing that would frighten the children. Musically and artistically they run from superlative (e.g. Brahms's third symphony's allegretto third movement) right down to sickeningly smoothed out Mantovani-ised renditions of Albinoni's Adagio and Pachelbel's Canon. Karajan's `one style suits all' philosophy renders baroque compositions just about unlistenable when you know how this music should sound. As background music when doing housework chores, washing the car, or fiddling with some self-assembly matchwood dross from Ikea they are perhaps OK, if you like this sort of thing.

Every time I see one of these Karajan Konfections, I'm reminded of comments by Karajan when he made an appearance in Oxford to receive an honorary doctorate in the late 1970s where, (never missing the chance to wag the admonitory finger at the `inferior' Anglo-Saxon people) he criticized the British for being too preoccupied with pop music. He'd obviously not ventured out from his Salzburg fortress into his own country's pubs and café's where UK and US pop were just about all you would hear! Well these `Adagio' CDs are an attempt to sell Karajan in pop/rock-like quantities and to my mind they often degrade the music's worth. Still, royalties therefrom will add to the Karajan Koffers (he left only a paltry £2 hundred million when he died in 1989) ensuring that his widow, Eliette continues to eat cake and not bread.

I am really a modern jazz music fan, but lately classical music has appealed to me more and more. The original reason for ordering this version of *Karajans Adagios* was the film music from the Orson Welles *The Trial* (the Tommaso Albinioni *Adagio*) it is a wonderful haunting melody, plus the organ and violin intermix so well,i would have gladly bought the cd just for that track alone.what a bonus then that all the other tracks are superbe in their own right.the recording is up to the usual german recording standards, deep in the background and capturing the high notes of the violin.i have played this cd now for over 20 times and still get so much pleasure from it.highly recommended.

I recently revisited this collection and thought I should add my voice to that of the many who have found this collection brilliant. when I bought mine several years ago, it was sold as a two pack. I note that the set is now sold separately as one and two. It means it might cost more, but it is worth it. These recordings are masterpieces and you only have to listen to them to know why.
