Actually Factually contains the truth behind dozens of beliefs we take for granted, covering everything from science to geography to history.

Product Description

A fascinating collection of misunderstandings, mistakes and misconceptions, "Actually Factually" reveals the reality behind just a few of the myths that get mixed up with truth. If you really thought that Christopher Columbus discovered America or that Henry VIII definitely had six wives this book will bring you right back to Earth with a bump.Full of fantastic facts to wow your teachers, friends and family, the entries include: your hair and nails continue to grow after you die; a goldfish has a memory of about three seconds; water goes down the plughole the other way in Australia; ship's Captains can perform marriage ceremonies; a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human being's; lightning never strikes in the same place twice; eating before you swim is dangerous; pirates made people walk the plank; a dog year is equal to seven human years; 'Ring a Ring O'Roses' is about the Black Death; You only use 10 per cent of your brain; a swan can break a man's arm; you can use an umbrella as a parachute; and the Great Wall of China is the only man-made object visible from space.

4.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to be out-smarted parents!, 27 Sep 2009

This review is from: Actually Factually (Buster Books) (Hardcover)
Actually Factually passes the hardest test of all...it impressed the children!

This wacky take on a kids reference book is split into bitesize chunks, with cheeky nougats of smarty pants info perfect for getting one-up on the old fogey parents, and questioning those common misconceptions we are all guilty of!

"Chocolate gives you spots" will fill young people in on some burning questions while classroom science is put in a much more quirky and memorable form when the seasons are explained.

Creations like this from Buster Books are great for encouraging inquisitive children to think independently!

4.0 out of 5 stars 50 popular myths explained, 19 Mar 2010
By
This review is from: Actually Factually (Buster Books) (Hardcover)
An interesting little book, aimed at children but fun for adults too. Author Guy Campbell takes 50 misconceptions and explains the facts behind the myth. Do microwaves really cook from the inside out? Why do carrots help you see in the dark, or do they? Can chocolate really give you spots? These and many other muddles are explained in a fun way with an easy to read text. A great bedside book and very entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars QI for children!, 29 Dec 2011

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Actually Factually (Buster Books) (Hardcover)
This was bought for my 9 year old son for Christmas. Initially he was a bit dismissive but picked it up a couple of days after Christmas and is now finding it hard to put down. It does what is says in the summary - takes long-held beliefs or misconceptions and gives the truth behind them - about two pages per "fact" as far as I can see. It means that he can now rival his dad (who got given the QI book) in the "Did you know.....?" stakes! Written well enough for children to read and understand - but not over-simplified. A good find.
