Book Description

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY

One of the best ways for children with autism, Asperger's, and sensory processing disorders to learn is through play. Children improve their motor skills, language skills, and social skills by moving their bodies and interacting with their environment. Yet the biggest challenges parents, teachers, and loved ones face with children on the autism spectrum or with sensory processing disorders is how to successfully engage them in play.

Pediatric occupational therapist Tara Delaney provides the answer. In 101 Games and Activities for Children with Autism, Asperger's, and Sensory Processing Disorders, she shows you how to teach your children by moving their bodies through play. These interactive games are quick to learn but will provide hours of fun and learning for your child. And many of the games can be played indoors or outdoors, so your child can enjoy them at home, outside, or on field trips.

More than one hundred games that help your child:

  • make eye-contact, stay focused, and strengthen his or her motor skills
  • associate words with objects and improve language and numerical skills
  • learn how to interact with others, how to take turns, and other social skills needed for attending preschool and school

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable guide 20 Jun. 2013
By Mrs A
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a brilliant, intelligently set out and helpful asset to any parent struggling to understand and/or play with their child or young person with additional needs or help them to develop. This book provides a fresh set of ideas and clear instructions how to carry them out, as well as the reason why you might want to play it and the desired effects of playing each activity. Also a must for anyone who works with young people. Will be a book I refer to again and again.

2.0 out of 5 stars not aimed at young children 5 Feb. 2014
By polly
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was excited when I bought this book as I had hoped for endless, well 101, activities. Unfortunately there are only about 2 activities that I am able to use with the four year old child I care for. Most of the games were for children with communication skills but I had hoped for ones I could use with a child only interested in sensory stimulation and who can not talk. Book has now been stuck on a shelf rather than used regularly.

4.0 out of 5 stars 101 games and activities 30 Oct. 2012

I found this book interesting. It had a few good ideas which I am using in the classroom. However, I think this is very well suited for a parent with a child on the autistic spectrum.

This book is very readable. I contains very clear explanations of the barriers these children face and why the interventions will help them. It is clearly based on good understanding as well as years of experience. All the ideas are worthwhile and fun and I shall be using many of them with the pupils I teach.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas 10 Jun. 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Nicely explained, with the purpose and aims of the activities having clear descriptions about what skills are being developed. Really good ideas which can be used for a wide ability range as the activities are graded. A useful resource.

4.0 out of 5 stars good for the whole class 16 Oct. 2011
By Mrs. R
Format:Paperback
Although this book is American and some ideas would not be viable in our classroom settings I found most can be adapted and it has got some fantastic games that have been very useful.
