  • For Flash artists learning ActionScript, Flash programmers seeking to create games, and upgraders from ActionScript 1.0/2.0.

Gary Rosenzweig's ActionScript 3.0 Game Programming University, Second Edition is the best hands-on tutorial for learning ActionScript 3.0, the programming language behind Flash Professional CS5. You will master all the basics of ActionScript programming by building 16 robust games. One step at a time, you'll learn techniques (and get tested code) that can be adapted to virtually any project, from games to training and advertising. The first edition earned widespread raves; Rosenzweig has now updated it with seven brand-new games that teach even more valuable ActionScript 3.0 skills and techniques. You will first learn how Flash and ActionScript 3.0 work together, the elements of an ActionScript program, and how to build a basic game framework with ActionScript. Next, Rosenzweig walks you through building the full spectrum of ActionScript games, including brain games, animation-based games, picture puzzles, games based on direction and movement, casual games, word games, Q and A games, action games, game worlds, and more. This edition adds new chapters on card games and 3D games, with High-Low, Video Poker, Blackjack, 3D Paddle Ball, 3D Scavenger Hunt, and two other new projects.

This is a great programming book for first timers users with ActionScript, beacuse it explains the concepts behind the physics of game programming. If you are familir or not familir with ActionScript. The author does a great job in explain the what each function does and how to implement then in your future projects. Other great feature of this book is that you can create a game at the end of the chapeters that envoles game progamming so you can tests the skills you have just learnet. If you are looking for a great, exciting programming games book then invest into this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good But You Need a Little Knowledge First 26 Feb. 2013
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was looking for something a little more detailed, as I was starting AS3 from Scratch, you have to have some knowledge already to use this book to it's potential.

The Demo Games are by far the best and most helpful bit, you can Download the Flash Files of the Games already made and I found this useful going through the code on the finished game and learning how the coding works from their.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really helpful 17 Dec. 2013
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Gary Rosenzweig is an excellent tutorial writer explaining every step in detail allowing anyone (my brother who has no experience with Flash nor any programming) to make quality games; and this book does not limit you to only making platform games or just any other, he opens up making any game or application.

5/5 is not a high definition for rating, this book is 100/100!

    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I used this to great effect to learn and teach Games Programming to Level 3 students.
The book is good, but its the resources that are really excellent.
Well laid out and done with lots of small steps that can be learnt in whatever order you need for the game you are designing.
A variety of code examples for different types of games.
    Excellent
