Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Laptop vandal Kid 606 has made a career skirting the borders of copyright legality, but The Action Packed Mentallist Brings You the Fucking Jams might just be his most audacious statement yet. "All songs not written by Kid 606", read the credits. A telling sleeve note, because over the next 60 minutes, we hear the Kid in full culture-jamming flow, hijacking everything from bootleg culture standards (Missy Elliot's "Get Ur Freak On", Kylie's "Can't Get You Out My Head") to totally unexpected picks from the vault (Radiohead's "Creep", the Bangles' "Walk Like an Egyptian") and forcing snippets of them into perverted dancefloor medleys with the whiplash crack of modern R&B and the anarchic spirit of left-field electronica. "Rebel Girl" finds the Kid reaffirming his vows to the punk-rock aesthetic with a screeching overhaul of the Bikini Kill original, while the cheeky "MP3 Killed the CD Star" tosses cuts of D12's "Purple Pills", the Artful Dodger's "Re-rewind", and Buggles' "Video Killed The Radio Star" into the audio blender. All good dirty fun, basically. Just don't play it to a lawyer.--Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent Gabba... not an oxymoron. 3 Mar 2003
By 529
Format:Audio CD
I would argue that this album is far more accessible than "Down with the Scene" in as much as the noise and nasty beats are filtered through some unexpected pop melodies this time, rather than flying off on their own. The sampled tunes provide some foundation for the chaos that Kid 606 brings to the mix, which to my ears is a more satisfying sound than that on "Down with the Scene". Personally the Missy Elliot sampler is one of my favourite tunes from 2002, full of twists and turns, combining an element of humour with... ahem... "intelligent gabba". Aside from the increased use of obvious samples, the emphasis on this album is on the distorted kick drum, whereas on "Scene" it was the scatter-shot snare. OK, so there are some bits of over-indulgent sample-destruction, like the Radiohead-sampling last track which doesn't really go anywhere, but that's excusable considering how searing the rest of the CD is.

I would provide a warning here- easy listening this aint. If you've heard "Down with the Scene" you know what to expect- nasty razor sharp beats, digital distortion, and a big dose of randomness. If you've only heard the (admittedly lovely) ambienty stuff like "PS I Love You"- beware! This is really a love it or hate it sort of album. If you like the sound of Atari Teenage Riot with a sense of humour and or Aphex Twin with pop sensibilities, then you'll love it.

One last thing- if you get the chance to see Kid 606 live, go!

4.0 out of 5 stars Much more than a novelty record..... 13 Nov 2002
Format:Audio CD
....much less than 'Down with the Scene'.

Hugely entertaining - even the relatively straight version of Kylie's 'Can't Get You Out of my Head'. It's kind of like the Kid 606 Kiddie Party Ultra-Megamix CD with extra glitches and digital distortion.

But on the downside, I've played it about twice since the first week I had it. Work it out yourself: if you like Kid 606 then this should amuse you, if you don't know Kid 606 then try 'Down with the Scene', if you don't like Kid 606 then I'm sure you'll be able to figure out some kind of alternative solution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the nay-sayers 5 Dec 2003
By Howard Klein - Published on Amazon.com

Hey, I love Kid 606's crazy assed gabber as much as you do, but don't knock this album. The first 2 tracks alone and you've got you're moneys worth. As for the ignoramous that's trying to bash "The Kid", by questioning the deservedness of his notability for his live shows, go play on your mac and make some noise like my man here, then your oppinion might count. Get this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars not his best, but worth it 24 Aug 2002
By David M. Madden - Published on Amazon.com

this is a collection of "white label" style remixes by the kid. ..., but it is my gain. everyone from the buggles, missy miss demina, the bangles, d12 get the kid 606 enema/tweakfest. i can see this as a great idm club jam. very entertaining, but it is a little long and tedious at times. it feels like an "i'm going to write something to make me happy today" kind of thing. it does not display the depth of his writing on such albums as "down with the scene" nor "p.s., i love you". however, "Action Packed Mentalist ..." is a very interesting exploration that nearly caused a psychotic episode when i was searching for the Atlanta airport...it was just what i needed. trust me.
3.0 out of 5 stars Kid606 - The Action Packed Mentallist Brings You 25 Feb 2011
By scoundrel - Published on Amazon.com

Kid606 loves his noise---and really, so do we. On his album THE ACTION PACKED MENTALLIST BRINGS YOU..., he runs roughshod all over pop music history, adding noise and distortion to a whole slew of artists. I think it might be more appropriate to think of this album as a one of unauthorized remixes, rather than an original. The problem that arises is that the strength of the track will depend on the source material. So when he takes on Soul II Soul and the Bangles in "Kiddy Needs a New Pair of Laptops" or Kylie Minogue in "Smack My Glitch Up," the results are great. "Rebel Girl," however, is completely unlistenable. Other tracks, in which he speeds up hip-hop to hardcore levels, work for the most part, but only become interesting when he throws in hits from the 80s (The Buggles, A-Ha, Yello) into his blender of noise. I especially like his deconstruction of Radiohead on "This is Not My Statement," which continually repeats and filters the same phrase until it becomes a mantra, then a whisper and a buzz.
