Missed opportunity,
This review is from: Action Packed: The Best of Jonathan Richman (Audio CD)
A mixed bag of gems and minor annoyances culled from the more recent JR catalogue. The thing that really pulls this down for the seasoned fan is that, on a "best of" mandate, there is always the thought going around your head that you would have assembled a more satisfying roster of tracks than these. Highlights for me are, "You're crazy for taking the bus", "I was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar" (this one was new to me, and brought a broad Richmanian grin to my lips) and the magnificent, "Neighbours". The latter trumps the previous album version, as a fine female vocal enters the fray (have had a quick scan read of the sleeve notes but can't find out who!)and it is (like much of this album) even more stripped down than usual. Also highly enjoyable is "Bermuda", wherein our hero digresses wildly into a highly amuzing monologue about the old hippies he used to watch in bands almost 30 years ago. He wryly comments how, at 40, they seemed impossibly old to be rock musicians.....and now HE is staring down the barrel of 50 ! As for the rest, these are typified by the pretty good (Fender Stratocaster, Closer, Reno) and the distinctly average "The Girl Stands Up to Me Now", "Vampire Girl". As I said, there are so many others (Vincent Van Gogh, That Summer Feeling, Better Than Before) that I would have liked to have seen make it onto his compilation that it is hard to avoid the feeling of anti climax somewhat. However, as an intro to your JR ignorant mates (poor souls), the best 4 tracks here would surely impress.

Excellent Collection Of Late Eighties/Nineties Jonathan,
By Oscillator (Carluke) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Action Packed: The Best of Jonathan Richman (Audio CD)
Twenty two postcards from the alternate universe where Jonathan Richman lives. This is a decent compilation picked from the albums Richman recorded for Rounder records during the late eighties and nineties. If you haven't heard from Jonathan in a while then this is the ideal companion. There is a definite difference from his seventies classics: Jonathan will never sound glossy but these tracks are actually more mid-fi than low-fi. Highlights of the highlights include 'Reno', 'Since She Started to Ride' and 'You're Crazy For Taking The Bus', all from Jonathan Goes Country, and 'I Was Dancing In The Lesbian Bar' from I, Jonathan. And you also get a cover of a Tom Waits song ( 'Heart Of Saturday Night') that actually works. With self-deprecating sleevenotes by Richman (no other artist has a world view quite like him), this is quite a nice package and solidly entertaining, Richman is the master of idiosyncratic but instantly accessible songwriting and this compilation provides further proof of it.

This review is from: Jonathan (MP3 Download)
Be warned - the download link has NOTHING whatsoever to do with Jonathan Richman. He's a cute looking kid though, I have to admit.
