Review

"Reading and following this book may well be the most precious gift you ever give not only to your partner, but also to yourself. I highly recommended it to those who wish to revitalize a floundering relationship as well as those who want to make a good relationship even better." --Robert D. Zettle, Ph.D., associate psychology professor at Wichita State University and author of "ACT for Depression "

About the Author

Dr Russ Harris was born in Liverpool, England. After graduating in medicine from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, he emigrated to Australia. As a family doctor, he became increasingly interested in the psychological aspects of medical illness (and increasingly less interested in writing prescriptions). In his eclectic career, he has been a stand-up comedian, sex therapist, filmmaker, novelist, and workshop presenter. He now practices as a psychological health physician in Melbourne.

For a change, a book around relationship struggles that does not focus on mending your partner (or you for that matter).

Russ Harris does a good job of relating the ACT process to the issues of stuckness, separation and conflict that couples may face. He incorporates exercises (really worth not skipping) that are quick and straight forward to do. There are exercises that you can do with your partner if they're willing to do them, and I think that they could provide really rich experiences. They're not my partner's thing, which is fine, and I still got a lot out of this book without doing the exercises for couples.

I'm not going to go into the principles of ACT too much ... the blurb, and other 'look inside' material on ACT books do that well enough. What I experienced was being gently led through ideas that helped me to see the stuff that I did in my relationship that (rights and wrongs aside) just didn't work. I was challenged to hold my beliefs and experiences a little more lightly and to see what happened. I'm a buddhist and regular meditater, and so found the value of mindfulness easy to accept. What this book has given me that my buddhist practice hasn't so far, is useful exercises that i can use in the moments where I'd be liable to behave or think in unhelpful ways. There is now a new lightness, spaciousness and sense of respect in my relationship that is deeper than before .... and ... strangely (or not so strangely!) that is the case for my partner too, although he's not touched the book - he's just been around a slightly altered me!

My relationship was by no means in big trouble; in fact it was going really well for the most part.

This book is a real gem for anyone interested in enriching and adding meaning to their relationship. It helps to have read Harris's other book The Happiness Trap [[ASIN:184529825X The Happiness Trap (Based on ACT: A revolutionary mindfulness-based programme for overcoming stress, anxiety and depression)]but this is not essential. Act With Love is a definite winner when it comes to facing and subseqently changing the DRAIN in ones relationship and recognising the areas for improvment within oneself rather than piling unrealistic expectations on ones partner! It's a good idea to download the free worksheets and to follow these as one reads the book, I found that very helpful and it makes the book more of a useful WORKBOOK rather than another random self-help book. If you are looking for ways to improve a loving relationship or indeed if you are seeking to save one that's a little shakey this is definitely the one for you. Three cheers for RUSS. M

a very good and easy to read book on having healthy relationships whether you are in a relationship or not. the emphasis on values and not goals was inspiring and making room for difficult feelings. Good to be reminded we all have difficult feelings and stepping back before reacting- all very useful.

... a book that lives in the real world!!

An amazing well of advise how to deal with unwanted feelings and thoughts by accepting them and at the same time trying
to detach from them by seeing them for what they are... just words!

Full of fantastic thoughts on how to live a healthy involved relationship, my bible from now on to which I will refer time and time again!!

If I was only allowed to buy one book this year this is what I would choose!
