3.0 out of 5 stars Average Film 14 Aug 2012

I was looking forward to finally being able to see 'Act Of Grace', it was completed in 2008 and has finally received a DVD release. I have to say that whilst it isn't a bad film, it is rather average.

Leo Gregory is excellent as the role of Dezzie, a young English boy who befriends a bullied Chinese lad, Yasin whilst still at school. Yasin's godfather arrives to take the teenager back to Hong Kong, but ten years later returns to Manchester and is reunited with Dezzie (who has spent time in prison) and invites him to become part of his triad gang family. There are elements of crime thriller, action and romance all mashed into one.

For me, 'Act Of Grace' suffered the most from awkward pacing, there is a lack of character building and important moments in the film (such as Dezzie's romance with Yasin's sister) are flashed by very quickly.

I thought that 'Act Of Grace' was an uneven film and could have been better. However, I did enjoy Leo Gregory's solid performance, the occasional humour and the gritty drama, like I said, it isn't a bad movie. Having said that, it isn't something that I would watch repeatedly but I do think that it did have enough high points to merit three stars.

This is from director Noreen Kershaw, who the cover extols as being the director of `Shameless' but for context this was actually made back in 2008. It is about Dezzie played as a grown up by Leo Gregory (`Tristen and Isolde and `Green Street' which was rubbish by the way). As a schoolboy in Manchester he is picked on and bullied, not just at school but also by his alcoholic, womanising and violent father. One day a new boy shows up and he is Chinese so the bullies start on him instead, at first Dezzie is relieved, but then a random act of kindness changes his viewpoint. This is Yasin played as a grown up by Chike Chan who was in `Batman Begins'.

Well Dezzie stands up for his new friend possibly cos he fancies his sister, but we are not told, he then gains the respect of peers and the new family alike, who treat him better than his own ever had. Suddenly the God Father of Yasin and his sister Mui turns up and says they have to return to Hong Kong - and the reason is not given but they are quite a rush; Dezzie is devestated.

Anyway stuff happens and ten years flit by until they are reunited, but this time it is more than friendship that Yasin is offering, he wants Dezzie to join his `family', only slight plot spoiler it is sort of a Triad thing. It is explained that it is not a criminal thing but one of support, protection and most importantly `family', not criminalistic parasites. What follows is a tour of blackmail, torture, ropey pole dancing and some up front nasty violence. A word on the cover art I do not remember seeing any of that in the film, the masks etc, but that said this would still get a 7.1 on the violence Richter scale, or the `Jason Statham' scale as it is to be renamed.
