From Amazon.co.uk

Set in America during the Vietnam War, Across the Universe is a powerful love story set against a backdrop of political and social unrest. It's a story of soul-searching, self-doubt, and individual powerlessness cleverly conveyed through a multitude of Beatles songs. Like young adults all across America during the 1960's, Jude (Jim Sturgess), Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), Max (Joe Anderson), Sadie (Dana Fuchs), Prudence (T.V. Carpio), and JoJo (Martin Luther) are in turmoil over the war; questioning their individual roles in the war effort and struggling to find a way to hold true to their beliefs while making a difference in the world. While love proves a powerful uniting force, its limitations become clear as relationships are strained and broken over individual perceptions of responsibility to cause and country. A fairly bizarre juxtaposition of extremely stylized, almost hallucinogenic scenes of swirling colours and reflections, highly choreographed dance segments, seemingly commonplace character interaction, and emotionally packed close-up footage of characters lost in contemplative song, this film imparts a good sense of the confusion and passion of the time and is at once powerful, invigorating, and disturbing. The film runs a bit long at 2 hours 11 minutes and several segments drag noticeably, thanks to some incredibly slow song tempos. Warning: this production may change how you think about a favourite Beatles song forever. --Tami Horiuchi

5.0 out of 5 stars All You Need Is ...Another DVD Cover 12 Aug 2008
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was initially put off by the "Mills and Boon" style dvd front cover and the potentially naff idea of creating a romantic narrative through press-ganging songs into use when they have such significance in their own right. But the film reveals successive delights. The director is truly inspired and her film is terrific visually, emotionally and musically.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thing of rare beauty 16 Feb 2009
By Arthur Dooley VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
A musical is a cinematic form which is an acquired taste for some. However, if you allow yourself to suspend belief for a couple of hours and let this film wash over you like a warm wave then you will emerge uplifted and joyous through the experience.
Without wishing to offer a blow by blow account of the film, suffice it to say that visually the film is glorious, the tale is told with wit and ingenuity and the music is of course sublime.
A beautiful way to spend an evening....enjoy !

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece 25 July 2008
Format:DVD
Me and my girlfriend watched this film not long ago, and to be honest I wasn't keen because I'm not a fan of the beatles! However after watching this film I wasn't swayed into being a fan but I very quickly agreed with my girlfriend buying the soundtrack with a amazon voucher. Purely because the DVD wasn't out at the time. I'll be honest I still don't owe this film but I will make a purchase straight after writing this review. This is one of the few films which would be well worth a £19.99 price label the story and songs work incredibly well its almost scary! This film is nothing short of a Masterpiece and deserves to be sat on everybodies DVD shelf!
