Product Description

Product Description

The minute that Marubetta meets Lucius, she hates him - pompous, stuck-up nephew of a Roman official! He thinks that, as a Briton, she is terribly provincial and she finds him arrogant and big-headed. But the year is 397 AD and life in Roman Britain is getting dangerous. And when Marinetta's home, close to Hadrian's Wall, is raided, Marinetta and Lucius are forced to act together.

3.0 out of 5 stars Support material for 'Invaders & Settlers', 24 Jan 2001
By Dill (Lincs, England) - See all my reviews
As a brief introduction to Britain in the last days of Roman rule, this is quite useful. It doesn't go into a great deal of historical detail, but gives an indication of life for relatively ordinary citizens of late Roman Britain. The travels of Marinetta and Lucius give children a good idea of the sheer size of the Roman Empire, and the children's conversation with Stilicho (a historical character)in Chapter 12 illustrates some of the pressures Rome was experiencing in the 5th Century AD. As literature, it's short, punchy and more suited to lower Key Stage 2 than Upper. It lacks the complexity of narrative and lyrical descriptive passages which would stretch Upper Juniors( Try Rosemary Sutcliffe or Henry Treece for this). The only glaring anachronism is the map in the illustration in Chapter 12 (the Romans' skills in cartography weren't quite up to this standard!) although this is actually quite useful as a graphic representation of the breadth of the Empire. All in all, I would be happy to recommend this as a short serial story for Years 3 or 4 in support of the Invaders and Settlers Unit of Work.
