This album is great. Its great coz its old, its great coz its loud, and most of al its great coz its heavy.
The heaviness of this album must be heard to be believed. Admittedly, if you are new to death metal and your first purchases were Cannibal Corpse or Deicide, then this will sound tame. But if you remeber when Obituary and their ilk were fresh young faces, then this album (if you havn't got it already) will blow the nostalgic cobwebs away.
My personal favourite tune is 'The one Insane'. Its got a brutally chunky riff and the vocals are spot on, with no over the top gurgling or belching. The other real grinder on here is 'Execute them all', a pacy track with chugging guitars and excellent overall structure. Theres also a cover of 'Breaking the law' by 'Priest on here, but it is a little bit cheesy, and suffers from too much heavy sound.
Just about every track on this album is a winner, with the 2 I mentioned taking just about top spot together.
If you liked Amorphis' heavier moments, or Entombed's (superior) guitar sound, buy this.
Up the old school viking Death Metal !!!

I'm having a real old school momment right now. I've been listening to some old gear (Malevolent Creation, Hypocrisy, Vader to name but a few) and Unleashed's 1993 third album enevitably cropped up.

Across The Open Sea is a mixed bag. On the one hand it has some of the best, most heavy riffs to come out of 1993. On the other hand, it has some really wobbly momments, and a crazy Judas Priest cover that does it no favours at all.
As I seem to recall Unleashed had just moved labels, or been dropped from their previous label around the release of this album, and that may go some way to explaining the hot and cold nature of the songs contained within it.
'To Asgaard We Fly' the albums opener, typifies the style Unleashed do really well. Chunky riffs from the off, traditional verse/ chorus structure and Jonny Hedlund's growling vocals. Simple yet effective.
Then theres the other side of the coin. In this case second song 'Open wide' is just a "do it by the numbers" sub-death metal tune. And thats the nature of the album.
'The One Insane' has to get a mention for its awesome heavy as hell riffs and catchy lyrics. If Sabbath were a death metal band, they'de have written this.
The title track is a pretty good acoustic piece. A bit strange and disjointing, but taken on its own its ok.
'Breaking the Law', the Priest cover, is terrible. I don't know what they were thinking but it was a terrible move to include it. Hedlund's vocals are not suited to singing this track at all, and the fact the music isn't really that much different from the original, accentuates the wrongness of the vocal style.
Over all Across The Open Sea, is a good solid old school death metal album. I'm not going to extol its virtues just because its Unleashed, I don't think it has a great deal of virtues to be honest, but what it does well, it does really well. For fans of chugging riffs and simpler but memorable days of death metal.
And I still stand by what I've said about their latest offering 'Midvinter Blot'. In the 15 or so years between this album and the new album just mentioned, there really is no difference or progression at all. So buy this, and leave Mid Vinter Blot alone.

Unleashed Is a Beast 17 Jun 2011
By J. Hill - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Unleashed started to expand some elements already present on their previous albums, and other than the less-than-incredible production, came up with a five-star effort. The songs here offer a range of death metal styles, from fast-paced brutality, to mid-paced death n' roll, to slow, plodding crushers. Some Viking themes appear in the artwork and lyrics, as on their past efforts, helping to establish a sub-genre that thrives today with bands like Amon Amarth and Hammerfall. Whether you like Unleashed or not, no one can deny that they set themselves apart from all of the other Swedish death metal bands. On this album and their others, they sound nothing like Entombed, Grave, Dismember, At the Gates, or any other well-known metal band from Scandinavia. They never went for the buzzsaw guitar sound favored by Entombed, Dismember, and, at times, Grave. And while they do have some melodic sections, it's a different style of melody than that of Dismember or At the Gates. Vocalist/bassist Johnny Hedlund's wildman screams, growls, shrieks, and grunts round out the unique package this band presents.

Across the Open Sea boasts some excellent examples of the Unleashed brand of rocking brutality, beginning with the mid-paced To Asgaard We Fly, the slow Open Wide, and the speedy I Am God. This mix of tempos continues throughout the album and makes each song distinct. You never get the feeling that the songs all sound the same. This release has heavy, catchy riffs, high-speed solos, and a brash attitude unlike any other in Swedish death metal. I think it's one of their top three or four albums.

I hope this isn't their best 27 Aug 2008

I picked this album up after hearing about this band from a friend. He described it as a viking themed death metal band. Well, that's the last time I listen to his recommendations. This is an average at best death metal release. "The One Insane" and "Execute Them All" are fun songs, but the album as a whole isn't worth your money. It's not really brutal or interesting in any way, and the vocals are some of the worst death vocals out there. The band's cover of "Breaking the Law" is a joke at best. I gave it two stars because it's at least tolerable to listen to. Hopefully thier other albums are better then this one.
