I have used True Image 7 and now 8 for a couple of years and can confirm it is superior to Powerquest Drive Image 7.0 which I guess makes it better than Ghost 9.0 now that Symantec (Norton) have bought PowerQuest. I use this with a one touch Maxtor external hard drive. I also used PowerQuest (now Symantec/Norton) Partition Magic to separate my data, applications and operating systems into separate partitions for weekly-unattended incremental backups. I have done numerous restores (at one point my hard drive died) plus restoring individual files and it works great. It is really easy to use. Don't try to back up to DVD - external hard drives are so inexpensive nowadays and this is much better. There 's quite good support from the user forum and Acronis are "OK" at support - but they are getting like Symantec and charging. Also release 8.0 offered almost zero added value over 7.0 so Acronis are not "the anti-Symantec" champion you might think.

The best part about this litle baby is the fact that everything is done so easily no messing about, I created a copy of my entire disk and recently had a major screw up (i deleted lots of essential system files) but luckily i could restore it all using the software. If anyone is thinking about backing up their data go one better create an entire copy of your disk with this, you'll need it sooner or later.

I bought Acronis Disk Image 8, having had some bad experiences with Norton Ghost 9. Certainly Acronis is quicker, simpler to use and understand, although it doesn't have the same breadth of features as Ghost (at least in this version 8). But if you simply want to make a hard disk image back-up, then Acronis is hard to beat.

Like Ghost, Acronis still has issues with some CD/DVD drives, burning software and media. In particular it can report some DVD back-ups as corrupted whilst verifying them, despite the fact that the actual DVD burning process went fine.

I found that using good quality DVD media does reduce or eliminate this problem. The same was true for a friend's system also using Acronis Disk Image 8. However, the fact it happens at all, doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the back-ups.

The DVD's may actually be fine and would work, but you just can't be 100% certain. Better to transfer back-up images onto another hard disk, if you can.
