Fully updated second edition of the premier reference book onmuffler and lined duct acoustical performance

The highly successful first edition of this book (1987) is citedin many research and development papers as the only book in theworld focusing singularly on this important subject. Over theyears, the subject of analysis and design of mufflers has seengreat advances in depth as well as breadth. This second editionseeks to offer the latest advances as well the fundamentals, and isa result of the author s four–decade experience in graduateteaching, research, development and extensive industrialconsultancy.

This much–awaited book covers generation, propagation andsuppression of the exhaust and intake noise of the internalcombustion engines used in automobiles and captive generator sets, and the fan or the air–handling unit noise of heating, ventilationand air–conditioning systems.  A special feature of thissecond edition is its coverage of three–dimensional analysis aswell as the plane–wave theory. It is an essential guide forgraduate students on Mechanical Engineering courses, and is amust–read for engineers working on automotive NVH and the HVACSystems.

  • Presents original new research on topics including ellipticalmufflers, acoustic louvers, 3D analytical techniques, andflow–acoustic analysis of multiply–connected perforated–elementmufflers
  • Includes a general design procedure to help muffler designersin the automotive industry, exhaust noise being a major componentof automobile and traffic noise pollution
