Product Description

Product Description

Putumayo Kids presents Acoustic Dreamland, a soothing collection of songs for bedtime and relaxation. Celebrated singer-songwriters perform unplugged music to lull children to sleep and for adults to unwind to. The CD includes songs originally recorded by the Allman Brothers, James Taylor, Wilco and Mary Chapin Carpenter, among others. A read-aloud, mini storybook that parents can share with their children at bedtime accompanies the CD. Acoustic Dreamland is the fifth release in Putumayo Kids' popular Dreamland Series. Veteran folk musician Lucy Kaplansky opens the CD with a sweet rendition of Mary Chapin Carpenter’s lovely lullaby “Dreamland.” The lyrics to this song are featured in the enclosed booklet, charmingly illustrated by British artist Nicola Heindl, whose work appears on all Putumayo CDs. The collection features Parents’ Choice award-winner Victor Johnson’s reassuring “Everything Is Going To Be Alright,” while widely acclaimed Smithsonian/Folkways children’s recording artist Elizabeth Mitchell lends her beautiful voice to the Allman Brothers’ “Blue Sky.” William Fitzsimmons gently encourages “You Can Close Your Eyes” (James Taylor) and Kesang Marstrand’s enchanting vocals float “In the Land of Dreams.” Parents’ Choice award-winner Frances England recorded the lullaby “Here with Me” especially for this CD. Her song is followed by Mark Erelli’s warm, enveloping cover of Wilco’s “My Darling,” Rosie Thomas’ soft “Tomorrow” and Daniel Martin Moore’s tranquil “The Hour of Sleep.” Folk-rock band Hem’s lilting “My Father’s Waltz” nears the end, then Appalachian dulcimer master and children’s singer Rick Scott eases the CD to a close with the promise of a “Next Time.”

The songs on this Acoustic CD are gentle, relaxing ballads (almost) that help our whole family to nod off peacefully! A wonderful CD for the car on those sometimes difficult evening journeys when you want the kids to sleep but don't want to go mad listening to inane Nursery rhymes or some hideous rendition of so-called classic music played on a keyboard (Baby Einstein style - yuck!). If you like American crooners like Eva Cassidy, this is the CD for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars acustic nap land 12 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This was a gift for my 8 year old son. As a family we have other albums in this series and you can't go wrong if you want to listen to music from around planet earth. However on this ocassion this collection is mainly from english speaking artists and lots of country music style tracks. The biggest let down is that the album is only thirty minutes long!!! At full price that's abit poor. Having said that the tracks are all lovely and most of all my son loves this album and listens to it all the time!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Independent acoustic "folk" singers lull your kid's to sleep 4 April 2011
By Steven I. Ramm - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is another of the sonically diverse CD compilations from Putumayo, and the fifth volume in their "Dreamland" series. This time it is a selection of singer-songwriters playing ACOUSTIC instruments - described in the booklet, as "electric instruments were not used". The list of performers will probably be now to many - they record for small independent record labels (and, in the case of Elizabeth Mitchell's version of the Allman Brothers "Blue Sky", may not have been previously released).

The music is there to help put children to sleep but, because these are not primarily "children's artists", they will easily appeal to the parents (though they too might fall asleep with these (mostly) quiet arrangements. There is Mark Erelli's cover of Wilco's "My Darling" and William Fitzsimmon's take on James Taylor's "You Can Close Your Eyes". I found the latter song a lot grittier than Taylor's version. Fitzsimmon's voice has more of a Tom Waitts quality.

The 11 tracks clock in at just over 30 minutes - but by then the children will be happily asleep. Many of Putumayo's CDs promote a social cause a portion of the sales proceeds goes to a charity. This notation was missing from the notes on this CD so maybe the project has ended. (Hopefully not.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic Dreamland- great for kids and parents 3 April 2011
By mmm - Published on Amazon.com

This CD is so sweet and soothing. We listen to it every night, and it has become a great part of my son's nighttime routine. I love all the songs, and I find the lyrics to many of them beautiful. There really aren't any weak songs on the CD; my only wish is that it had 1 or 2 more songs as it seems somewhat short, but I think it is actually an ideal length for a bedtime CD. I plan to purchase this as a gift for friends who have babies/children, and I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Great 3 July 2011

Step One: Put toddler in crib
Step Two: Put on Acoustic Dreamland
Step Three: Leave despite the fact that you really want to stay and listen to the music

This CD is really good. I need to put it on my ipod so I can listen to it in the car. It is a windows down back roads kind of CD. I have to admit I am really picky about music, but I love this CD.

1. Not too folk music-y
2. Not too country (which I don't like)
3. Not too cutesy kiddie
4. Just perfect

5.0 out of 5 stars Quieter Nights with Acoustic Dreamland 1 Oct 2011
By alphabetsoup - Published on Amazon.com

I stumbled upon the Putumayo Kids' website by chance and began to browse their selections. My 9 month old baby girl and I--mostly I--had been having trouble sleeping through the night, as she has rediscovered the joys of skin to skin contact while she sleeps and she won't allow me to put her down in her crib. I was hesitant about the purchase, but after reading the reviews of Putumayo's Acoustic Dreamland, I decided to purchase. She was asleep by the time William Fitzsimmons told her that she "could close her eyes, it's alright," and a miracle occurred. . . she stayed asleep. Her tiny hands hadn't gripped my nightshirt for dear life, she let go. . . and went off to sleep. So, for all you on-the-fencers about the purchase (It's $15 for 30 minutes worth of music), I am here to tell you that it's worth it. Not to mention, you can listen to it over and over, and it doesn't make your want to scratch out your own eyeballs!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it for me!!! 4 Nov 2012
By Bibliophile - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this CD along with: Latin lullabies, instrumental dream land and daddy plays. Of the 4 this one is my favorite. I am about 5 months pregnant and searching for calming music to use during labor and delivery that I would also want as part of my baby's nightly routine. This CD is amazing! I absolutely love it. I listened to all 4 of the CDs immediately upon receiving them and of all of them this one just jumps out at me. It is the only one I still listen to. The lyrics are clear and crisp and gentle. They say the things that mommies and daddies the world over want to tell their babies every night. As your little one learns to talk I have no doubt they will request this CD because the lyrics make you feel happy while at the same helping you doze off. Every song is not just cutesy baby music but rather a repeated declaration of how much "I love you" and will always love you. Isn't that what we all want our babies to know? That we love them and that we will always love them? this CD does just that without pandering to "baby sounds" or baby voice. This is a CD of love songs from you to your baby.
