A few years ago there was programme on the BBC called "Songwriters Circle". Its format was to take three heavyweight singer song writers, sit them in front of a live audience and let them belt out versions of their own favourite songs. Sometimes the three singers joined in together, but on other occasions it would not have been appropriate. One such occasion was when Suzanne Vega and Loudon Wainwright sat in shock and awe as our greatest guitarist the magnificent Richard Thompson played a version of "1952 Vincent Black Lighting". After watching the brilliance of Thompson's fingerpicking performance on U Tube, one poor commentator admitted in exasperation that "My guitar is now a coffee table. What's the point"?

Having these acoustic classics nicely locked into one CD is an out and out joy. One reviewer here rightly points out that it is an obvious choice of songs; a sort of acoustic greatest hits. This is true, but from another angle its Richard Thompson reworking and reshaping some of his best work and in this sense the sun is truly shining. Highlight's come fast and thick, not least a brilliant "Down where the drunkards roll" where Thompson's playing is at its economical best. Granted you may have heard many other great versions of "Beeswing" and "1952 Black Vincent Lightning" but that's because Thompson is always so good that the quality barometer never dips below freezing. These acoustic versions give a stripped back newness to some of the songs although this reviewer has always considered the brilliant "From Galway to Graceland" an acoustic song. You could also argue that the original version of "Dimming of the Day" cannot be improved upon and all would agree.

I have been a total RT junkie for longer than I care to remember.
I travel to see him everytime he is over here in the UK.
I even got up (very) early this morning to listen to his new album via Amazon Music, hours before it drops through my letter box.
And I am really enjoyed listening to it as I simultaneously report on the experience.
I mean, the man can do no wrong, right? Ever.
The playing is at his incomparable best and the vocals as sublime as always. The development of the arrangements is, in most cases, stunning, even when one thinks back to the outstanding originals.
The choice of songs is what I imagine of the selection that is requested at the all-request shows. No bad thing.
Stand-out tracks s for me include Shoot Out, Valerie, The Dimming of the Day, Walking on a Wire, one Door Opens, Persuasion and Drunkards Roll. Oh and Galway, Bright Lights, Wall of Death and Misunderstood.
I just have this niggling feeling that I would have liked to hear a more wide-ranging selection from RT's magnificent back catalogue, hundreds more of which can justifiably be said to be classics.
I mean, I love Beeswing and Vincent as much as the next RT fanperson. I can play them in my head completely unaided.
Note for glorious note.
But, given the opportunity to re-work any number of other fantastic songs, I feel that, personally, for me, that this album is a slightly missed opportunity. I find the choice of songs ever so slightly underwhelming.
There, I've said it.

Richard Thompson comes at you in two configurations: electric with his band, and acoustic on his own. For this set, he adopts the latter persona and selects a dozen or so songs from his extensive back catalogue to lay down for us all. He's an accomplished acoustic guitarist, and has performed these songs countless times in his solo shows, so this is a collection of assured readings which will be of interest both to fans who - like me - already have several versions of this material, and to people who perhaps would like a gentle introduction to his art, and/or a souvenir from one of his acoustic shows (he tours extensively, and is currently playing acoustically at UK summer festivals).

As well as being all-acoustic, it's worth pointing out that - as far as I can tell - this has been recorded without overdubs, apart a dab or two of mandolin to further enhance the lovely "Beeswing". That's because, even for those listeners who've seen him live, it's often hard not to believe there's more than one guitar being played on some of these songs. The obvious example of this is "1952 Vincent Black Lightning", where his intricate fingerpicking fits precisely into the rhythmic pulse set up on the bass strings, and sparkles with imagination and originality (I have perhaps twenty different recordings of him playing this song, and he seems to be always discovering new ways to do it). My favourite track in this set, however, is probably "Shoot Out The Lights", which started life as an electric song and, when performed live, is a vehicle for his extensive, coruscating soloing.
