Biography

Way back in 2010 I opened my mouth to say that Infinite Arms felt to me like it was the first Band of Horses record. I was trying to imply that I finally had the band I'd always dreamt of, that the album was a celebratory debut of this unit. Or was I joking? That's the thing: I've finally become comfortable enough in this band that sometimes I don't even know when I'm ... Read more in Amazon's Band of Horses Store

Product Description

Acoustic at The Ryman' is a 10-song virtual greatest hits set of acoustic renditions of songs from across the Band Of Horses catalogue. Recorded at Nashville's legendary Ryman Auditorium over two magical nights in April 2013. Having captured this two-night stand's worth of singular performances that the Nashville Scene said "brought to mind the best efforts of Eagles and Crosby, Stills and Nash," Band of Horses set about translating the energy and electricity of The Ryman document into the closest possible experience to having been there. Using the latest hardware from DSD recorder manufacturers Mytek, Band of Horses mixed the record in the band's hometown haunt of Charleston Sound. As a result, Band of Horses: Acoustic at the Ryman is one of a mere handful of non-classical/jazz albums mixed and mastered in the DSD format, capturing the ragged magic of an unforgettable performance in dangerously pristine quality. "The game plan was to keep it wild and expressive like the show while capturing it with highest resolution available," says the band's Bill Reynolds. "The electricity in The Ryman was off the charts. If that makes it to the listener, then we'll consider this a success".

Band of Horses, originally known for a brief period as Horses, is an American rock band formed in 2004 in Seattle, United States , by Ben Bridwell. The band has released four studio albums, the most successful of which is 2010's Grammy-nominated Infinite Arms. The band's lineup, has undergone several changes; although, the current members, Bridwell, Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey, Bill Reynolds, and Creighton Barrett, have all been with the band for several years.

The LP has an extra disc with an acoustic version of Weed Party as a bonus track

Inevitably live albums can have a stop gap quality to them and seem like treading water. The introduction of the Unplugged format in the early 90s of taking electric songs and setting them in an acoustic context kickstarted a new approach. No reason then why Band of Horses should not attempt to utilise this mechanism. They have managed to produce great songs over some excellent albums particularly the great debut "Everything all the Time'. Although you also sense that they have somewhat stalled in recent years and this concert feels like the band reaching the end of particular journey No one can fault their choice of venue notably Nashville's beloved and historic Ryman Auditorium (where the Grand Ole Opry used to call home) during two nights in April 2013. The acoustics of the theatre sound great and the audience is suitably enthusiastic at the at the right time (although a tad noisy on the opener Marry Song").

Throughout the vocals of frontman Ben Bridwell are rock solid and the band provide great backing not least on a lovely piano driven version of "Factory" and the excellent country harmonies of "Older" and the a cappella version of the Neil Young sounding "Neighbor". This reviewer found the bands last studio album "Mirage Rock" drifting into that most dangerous of musical places namely the middle of the road. Yet the admittedly acoustic "Slow Cruel Hands of Time" from that album is now confirmed as a great song on Ryman, while a bare bones "Detlef Schremph" is genuinely lovely. Another "Cease to begin" song "No One's Gonna Love You" really does benefit of being tripped down of its Bach like organ and the rawer delivery by Bridewell gives the song a new focus. The same cannot be said of one the bands most famous songs "The Funeral".

Cards on the table, BoH are my favourite band so I naturally love this to bits. This is, though a superb live recording that captures the nuances of their performance really well. Acoustic versions of some of their finest songs, brilliantly performed and superbly engineered. "Neighbor" and "The Funeral" really stand out from what is already a great set of songs.

How can such an odd looking bunch as this produce such sweet sounds. If you like acoustic, then don't dither buy immediately.

I read about this group in Acoustic Magazine and reading between the lines they do mainly electric guitar etc, I am into acoustic guitar so after reading about this album I thought I would try it.
Well worth buying some good songs and some good acoustic guitar playing.

Ben Bridwell's voice, particularly in this acoustic set, is beautiful.

If you ever get chance to see them, go! Exceptional, heart-felt, non-commercial music. A gem.
