yes, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. a magic fusion of retro rock 'n' roll cuting thru modern blues/jazz vibes. truly one of the most original records from one of the most original recording artists of the day. the obvious stand out tracks are; talk about the blues, with it's post-psycheldelic bazz fuzz noise and organised chaos of stopping, breaking and starting topped with nonsence but fitting lyrics. also; torture, with screams of 'BLUES EXPLOSION!' and chunky rhythms. thru the whole album, there is good consistency with sweet raw melodies and definite phatt beats holding it all together. the only criticism i have is that it's too short, and doesn't allow for enough variation between tracks. but who am i to diss artistic licence? so, in short; buy this album.

Now here is a boy who has his own style Jon Spencer. He is ablues man with an evil twist that just wont let go, he is a funk master. As we as singing songs he also shouts screams and generally makes a lot of noise. His first impressive song of the album is 'Magical Colours' and followed by 'Do You wanna Get Heavy?' you can just imagine a Southern preacher with a wasp in his dungarees. The single of the album which also sums up Jon Spencer's style is 'Talk About the Blues' which was a personal little dig at a big music magazine in America. They music is dirty and has many samples thrown in which they manage to use very well there are other interesting songs on the album but for a first time listener you may want to take in some of there other albums first.

Jon Spencer was doing his thing way back, with his band Boss Hog in the 90s, prior to the Blues Explosion, and long before Jack White came along and somehow made it all cool. Spencer must have been a major influence on bands like the White Stripes and the Black Keys, and this album lays down the groundwork for them, with just about every track having a great groove. So, while all the indie bands were trying to be clever, and techno-heads were twiddling knobs, Mr Spencer put down some monster riffs and reminded us of the roots of blues rock. A solid album of good stuff.

Don't get me wrony "Acme" is not a bad, it's just that it's not brilliant. I have to say I really admire the production, the flow from one song to another deserves mentioning, espically as so many people worked with them on this. However all that praise should really go to their producer and collaborator Calvin Jonson, of the Dub Narcotic Sound System.
The problem I have with this ablum is that some how it just doesn't reach the heights of their previous works. Perhaps because of the heavy use colaboration the blues explosion have lost their own very distinc voice. Indeed I loved "Now I Got Worry" because it was all over the place, you simply don't know where they're going next. Saddly here one song sounds much the same as another.
However I'm a committed blues explosion fan and just adore their individual sound. This sound makes it very difficult to appreciate their work on first listen but because Acme is much more main-strem and listenable more people can connect with it. Thus if the name is new to you, you could do worse than buy this, if however you want the definative blues explosion ablum pick up "Now I Got Worry".
